I'm putting a '97 318 magnum into a '72 Dart. It's my understanding that all magnums use a 360 oil pan, which I have, but I need to use a pre-magnum 360 oil pan gasket set. Is that correct? Also, I'm putting a pre-magnum 318 crank into this engine, do I need a magnum or pre-magnum rear main seal?
Thanks!

you need an LA pan gasket, correct. Or you have to massage the ends of the pan as the magnum pan gasket is to thin to seal.
can't answer the other.

I think if you install a LA crank in a Magnum, you will need to have the engine re-balanced. The Magnum pistons and rods are lighter weight than the LA versions.

You can use the one piece Magnum oil pan gasket if you make a wood or aluminum shims to glue in and fill the gaps at the top. Or hammer them out of the pan as said above.

I use a 360 LA pan with LA timing cover and use the magnum 1 piece pan gasket with no shims and no problems. 69 Dart

I've run them that way too, but there are also guys here that have blown the gasket out that way, dumping oil all over. Safer to fab 4 small shims if you want to run the 1 piece gasket.

I'm running an LA 4" crank in my 98' 5.9 block. I did have to rebalance it. It has the LA timing cover and oil pan using the magnum rear seal and LA oil pan gasket. The magnum gasket was gushing oil at the inside corners as said above.

Where were you leaking oil? I have never had a leak on my builds and I'm curious to know where the problem was. Are the inside corners the area where the timing cover and block and pan come together? I use silicone at all corners and have not had a problem.

was that on a Magnum 360 or 318. I can not believe that 318 Magnums use the 360 pan...

They do, when Chrysler designed the Magnums, the commonized the pans.

They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

for me the leaks occured at the very front and back of the pan.
That area just poured oil out when the engine got tilted pulling and putting it in the truck bed.
I had put the magnum gasket in originally and run it on an engine stand. It did not seem to leak on the the stand. But we didn't get the balance right pulling it off with the cherry picker and oil just poured out.

Good to know, I never had a problem but always good to know info. I actually always went with the magnum pan gasket because of it being one piece, and figured less chance of a leak. I have used both LA and magnum and prefer magnum.
