I've got a 440 in my Roadrunner with Indy SR heads, 11.5:1 compression, the dual-plane Indy intake, an 850 cfm Holley DP, forged slugs, and the TTI step headers. The cam is Comp's hydraulic flat-tappet .564"/.564" XE296HL grind with 251/257 duration. The car is primarily driven on the street, and only taken to the track once or twice a year.
The heads are OOTB, with only an intake-match port (this is how they came from Indy). Without switching out cams, could I benefit from a mild port and polish or do the SRs probably flow well enough for my combo?
Thanks in advance for any input.

That is a great head and will do fine for your application. Since you did not state a goal or that it has not reached some goal and considering the street needs you are in a good position. I do not think spending money on porting would be a good return on investment.

if it was me i'd be blending the runners & the bowls with tappered sanding rolls. 2 hours per head should make a noticable improvement. i'm one of those types that can leave things alone & i port everything, oil pumps included. i like to run my fingers over things & feel the smoothness. if it was for racing then send it to be cnc'd but for the street i'd jump in & give it a tickle up.

I don't have any specific goals (other than to just go faster). I was just wondering if I'm losing anything because the heads can't keep up with the cam. Would I gain anything substantial by getting the heads mildly ported?

send them to Porter. Oh yea there is gains to be had. The SR head is one of the best heads Indy makes IMO. Whats nice is the port can be much smaller than the -1 and flow similar numbers maxed out. 340-350+ cfm is the norm.
Porter can make the heads work well with some fancy valve job, back cut the valves make the low lift numbers Fat without hurting velocity and torque.
Maybe upgrade the rockers to faster 1.6-1.7 ratio to take advantage of the upper lift numbers without adding too much duration to the mix.
I personally like that cam, but I would take Porters advice on combo as a whole.
There is .5 and 8-10 mph in the heads alone ask me how I know...
Those was 8th mile times and gains for me. With head work, and new cam, everything else the same. But again this was a bracket car with lots of converter and gear...Compression was a modest 11.5:1 or so.

Talk to Dwayne, If I remember correctly Dwayne has a Valve job full-port work that really kicks up the .200 to .550 lift which would be perfect for what you need with that 251/257 Comp (Great cam, My buddy's 440 charger runs high 11's with 3.23 gears with that stick ). Check the tech archives under 'Big block Head Flow chart', SR(A) vs SR (B). That was several years ago and I'm pretty sure he's got a few new tricks that probably pick them up even more.

Anotrher thing I know would help is just some very basic radius work in the lower plenum transitions in the awesome Indy 2D intake (same one I run on my 517" max wedge). Those mods for 11.5:1 ( combined with a larger cfm carb) could be a cost effective way to pick up at least another maybe 40+ hp....even though you probably won't feel much below ~4000 because my guess is you still have more than adequate airflow to around that point. A 1.6 rocker would also kick you up another .035 or so (near .600" lift), that might halp as well....at least onthe intake.

My Charger is on youtube...type a search for wizerulz

Chuck sold the motor out of the Cuda, and retired the car from racing.

If your SR heads are out of the box from INDY just having a simple valve job done on the will pick your car up some. Unless you want to spend more money on just the heads, I wouldn't open them up. You never said if you have aftermarket rods. More power means more problems for the stock block.

I run Indy Sr 650s with a stage 11 port job by Indy. They are Max Wedge size on the inlets and according to the flow chart they flow 320.41 on the inlet and 250.60 on the exhaust.thats at .700 lift..Not saying you need to go that far for your set up,, but thats what is possible if you throw some money at them .Do they work??? oh yea

I just got my Indy EZ heads from Duane Porter and all I can say is he does great work. I am the kind of guy who likes to do all my own work but I have no flow bench so I have never flow tested any port work of my own and I wanted to make the most power I can with this eng on pump gas. I know Duane knows what works best as no matter what you think Duane does this every day for a living and he can test all of his work so he knows what works best. He is a profesional in every way and I knew there is no way I can do heads anywhere near as good as him. So I went with the Indy EZ heads prepped and worked by Duane and I am not sorry at all. I also have a cam coming speced by Duane for my eng. Ya cant beat the best and Duane is the best so by all means I would let him work your heads for you. Ron

considering what you have said and based on my personel expereinces in trying to make Mopar cars and wedge motors go quicker and faster the more air you give them(cams, heads, carbs, C.I. even) the faster and quicker(if your hooking up good to start with ) the cars go What I'm trying to say is yes to your question of will it make more power by working on your heads, it may end up spinning the tires more But if that happens that gives you something else to work on Been there, done that

As long as we are throwing out opinions, here's mine:
Looking at the information you have provided I don't think you have the cubic inches or rpm to use the SR heads as is. I think porting will be money wasted unless you stroke it, larger flat tappet or roller, steeper gear (I suspect), in other words make it a race car.

if you change the cam port the heads,, if you keep the cam you have,,, leave it be

lok for things to do elsewhere at this point till you want more lift, and a solid lifter

Indys old Super Modified port and polish is a joke, a buddy of mine showed me what was done, and posted a few pics years ago on here..
Its a basic window gasket match in the port a inch or so, thats it. maybe the valve job blended...
Think it was like $750 back then...
Were talking 10 years ago, before the CNC porting arrived.
