Anyone have any picture or narrow your own Dana or 8-3/4? I am getting ready to narrow mine for my Challenger. I have the new ends & new spring perches. What did you guys do for a fixture to hold everything true & centered. Just looking for idea's. I think I know how I am going to do it. Another idea or two never hurts.

Take a bunch of pics when you do it. I eventually want to do a Dana for my car, and want to do it myself too.

Cool, are the plugs/spacers alm or steel? What diameter is the rod you run through them? Thanks.

Have you check that rear end for square off of the new bearing flanges yet? If not you probally should I had my Dana 60 narrowed buy a shop that uses those, it is 1/2 inch narrower in the front 30 inches out and similar differences top to bottom I called the shop and they siad to take it to Dutchmens in Portland and have them straighten it out Another local shop that uses those also said he has to straighten every rear end he does(narrows), Ford, Chevy, Mopars, Dana or any other ones he does I have Ford nine inch (don't tell Quicktree )that is going into my 1940 Ford street rod that needs narrowing, I will take it and the Dana 60 to Dutchmen to do, narrow and straighten the nine inch and straighten the Dana 60

How can the flanges NOT be square and true...that is what that fixture is for?? Every narrowing shop that I know of uses that type of fixture. If it is a quality narrowing tool and checked for damage before using, I would think the rear would be straight and true.

Just commenting and asking.

Thanks I was woundering the same thing. I used 1 3/8 in. solid and true shaft that was longer than the rearend so both sides are jigged at the same time off of the carrier bearing saddles. I could spin the shaft after the ends cooled off. If it weren't true, I doubt that the shaft would spin. It would be in a bind.

Let me tell you guy's how I narrowed my dana back in the early 70's. They didn't have narrowing fixtures available and if they did only the big shops had them and there wasn't any around me. What I did was made a straight line down the dana tube and after figuring how much I needed to cut off I used a pipe cutter . Then took a piece of 2 1/2" exhaust pipe and pounded it into the dana tube, of course it bent up so so I cut the pipe off about 4" from end of the tube, lined up the lines and tapped the bearing end on. Now it's 35 + years later, I've never had a bearing go bad, I have changed the gears to different ratios and when I did I inspected the splines on the axles, no visible wear after thousands of runs. So, is it perfect? I doubt it, but it works for me, maybe I got lucky. Would I do it that way again?

it's ok to butt heads, just don't do it with a butthead

I made up pucks just like yours and I also use a long
straight edge to measure out at about 20" front and rear
then turn them for up and down just to make sure and
the diffs I have done are fine... I even check them
off the axle flange 20" out in both directions just
to be sure

Who cares if the bearing flanges are square?
Put some axles in and check them.
Maybe dutchman knows something Mark Williams doesn't

I can do it for you. I have the mandrels & fixture shaft. PM me if interested.

I care, I like my tires to be square with the rear end, not toed in or out That makes it a little easeir to make the car go straight down the track when the front wheels are in the air Little things can mean a lot

I don't know about your rear end but on the one I have all the bearing flanges do is hold the brake backing plate on.
Now ,the bearing bore must be square and true

Ok, just holds the brake hardware on...
If the flange is perpendicular to the bore, the flange will be in spec.
if not, caliper not in same plane as brake disc... = wear and tear.
Drum somewhat forgiving but....
Some forgiveness in bore center alignment but good indicator of that is flange runout.
Flange runout can very some also from warpage during welding, not likely but potential.

If I got my math right, 1/4" (1/2 of the observed measurement) out 30" out is less than 1/2 degree.

sin of that angle is .0083330444544. The sin value for a 1* angle is .0174. So the total out is less than 1* if at 1/2", 30" out.

I should have pointed out that I was measuring off of the axle flanges with the brake drums reoved, straight off of the axles , not the bearing flanges My bad I know some of the roundy round racers like some toe in on the rear tires but I don't Two 11 inch wide tires 1/2 inch closer together at the front and 1/2 closer on the bottom or top does using a solid spool does not equal the least amount of rolling resistance As far as the math, sine and cosine angles I don't need that or care, I want the rascal to be straight as I can get it
