I picked up a 440 source aluminum timing cover for my build. This unit looks great. I had to take some material off the cam bolts to get the cover to fit on (as per 440source) and that's not a problem.

What is a problem is it looks like the cover WILL NOT work with a TCI "Rattler" dampener.

The Dampener bottoms out on the seal housing before I get it snugged down with the dampener bolt!

Is anyone running this cover with an aftermarket Dampener?? Wich one works?

Looks like I may be selling my "rattler" in order to get a unit that will work with the cover.

I love the look of the cover!

I' running into the same problem but for a different reason. I found machinery washers that are close to the crank size and I ground the I.D. to fit the crank the filed a keyway. They are a hair over 1/8" thick and I put it between the lower timing sprocket and the damper. All the belt drive accessories will likely have to move a similar amount but that's pretty straightforward.

Otherwise, I'm pretty sure the outer dimensions of that cover are the same as stock so the issue must be with the damper.

I took this Dampener off of my 383 that had the stock cover on it. It was working fine with that engine.

Hmmm.. Guess i better bust out a stock cover and take some measurments.

Ok. I busted out the caliper...

The TCI rattler fits over the stock cover seal. The seal portion is small enough to fit into the recess on the Dampener.

The 440source cover is almost a quarter inch bigger then the stock cover!!!

In this picture, i have held up the caliper with the same measurement as seen in the first pic.

DAMN!

Looks like it's a stock cover going on. God only knows what aftermarket parts would work with this cover. And it's even one of their 100% made in the USA parts.

Poop..

We have an SFI approved damper with that cover, one of the cheap ones but son't remeber the brand. Just out of the memory, I would say that most aftermarket dampers have a bigger recess in the rear, and would fit.

I noticed the other day that AndyF mentioned his timing cover won't work with a Rattler. I love my TCI Rattler but I may have to sell it and get an ATI for better timing cover options.

In my previous post I was referring to the depth of the seal retainer - not thinking the width would be different. However, it stands to reason that it would have to be thicker material to have any strength and retain its shape when welded.

I've never owned a TCI damper but I did have a customer tell me once that his Rattler damper wouldn't fit my billet covers. I think the screw heads on the back side of the damper rubbed on the cover but he didn't send me a picture so I'm not positive.

I ran into the same problem with my TCI Rattler and the Milodon gear drive set up. I went with a ATI balancer that fit like a glove. The problem with my ATI balancer is the front (where the pully bolts on) is bowtie pattern. I really liked my Rattler.

My brother's rattler and indy timing cover had the same fitment issues as the OP has. Indy sells a spacer for the dampers with this issue.
The ati unit that fit the billet and cast covers use a longer hub fwiw. Beep

What he said..FWIW ATI sells the spacers too. Along with the aforementioned longer hubs for thier balancers.

Maybe I'm missing something, but what's the point of this timing cover? Or any that won't work with any dampner?? I could see if it was some trick piece...two piece for easy cam and/or cam timing changes maybe...

What's wrong with the cheap MP chromie for some bling, or a nice powder coated stock one??

They sell them with instructions that the cam bolts won't clear??? What the heck??!!?? Why not ENGINEER the part to work in the first place???
