I was looking through the online MP catalog and there are TWO cams with .509"/292 specs. One has 6 degrees less overlap for improved street manners. (if I remember the data right)
Yeah, & the one on the 114 is a p*ssi cam, you want the one on the 108 & dial it in around 102, i've run this cam in 3 440s & even lined straight up they rocked.

Gee, thanks. I was just pointing out that there is more than one that fits the description in the title. I think they're BOTH p*ssi cams, they are hydraulic after all. And only 1/2" lift? what a joke.

If you really like this cam, I suggest you get a Racer Brown SSH 44. The MP 509 cam was a near copy or the SSH 44. Before there was Direct Connection or the later Mopar Performance the Mopar race bulletins recommended Racer Brown cams and many of the Purple shafts were in fact copies of Racer Brown designs. The advantage of getting the "real" 509 cam from Jim Dowell at Racer Brown is that he will custom tailor it to your combination. He will give you the LSA best suited to your car and also grind in the best advance for you. I've dealt with Jim in the past and have always gotten good service and sound advice.
The SSH-44 and its little brother the SSH-25 are both great cams.
Cam ADV, DUR-----lift-----.050 Dur
SSH-25 ---286------.485-----236
SSH-44----292------.510-----243
MP-509----292------.509-----248
All of these Old school cams are great. Todays modern cams have nothing on them except a little extra lift.
Example: The 35 year old MP 509 248* duration cam has the following intake valve timing at a 104* ITC. Followed by a MODERN day cam from HUGHES with a 250* duration.
MP 509 Intake. open @ 20* BTDC, close @ 48* ABDC
Hughes, 5056---open @ 20* BTDC, close @ 50* ABDC
35 years later and we have nearly the Same exact timing events with a similer size modern cam,- the extra 2* of the 5056 250* duration @ .050
IMO, The tricky part of the cam Design was figured out YEARS ago. The above shows that IMO
Example; If you have 248* of intaske duration to play with, where do you put the valve events at BTDC and ABDC??
Open @ TDC, close @ 68* ABDC, OR
open @ 10* BTDC, close @ 58* ABDC, OR
open @ 20* BTDC, close @ 48* ABDC, OR
open @ 30* BTDC, close @ 38* ABDC.
And after 35 Plus years of Study, the answer is,??
The same as 35 years before!! . mike

Being "old school" is not for all. You have to be cool with running at a certain level. Good for street/strip and bracket racing. Which is me. Knocking the "only 1/2" lift" is ok too. If you only run "old school" iron heads you know that the ports basically stall at over .500 (aka 1/2" lift). Yeah, we could debate that there's more "area under the curve" with more modern profiles and there's also the 1.6 ratio rockers to band-aid it too. Whatever, it's bang for the buck. "old schoolers" know that the adjustable valvetrain opens a Pandora's box of additional spending. Can you go faster any cheaper????? Probably not. Can you run more consistent, or even faster, than a guy with more modern technology but not dialed in???? It certainly happens. Here's my old school 69 Rr. It has sat there so long it's very embarrassing to mention it. BUT I finally started to get back to it in the last few months........... http://www.moparts.org/moparts/picture/mopar03/moparty/img/DCP_0479.JPGI'll be running some old narrow front runner Ansen slots, the big 11.75" discs and a 6 Barrel hood.

I don't have the Mopar brand cam, but I do have the Comp "nostalgia" or whatever series they call it, 292/299 .509/.509 cam in my Charger with all the "wrong" parts...
What I mean by wrong parts is a 3000-3200 stall and 3.55 gears.
I'm running closed chamber Edelbrock heads, 2" Super Comp headers, Torker I intake, 870 Holley, Crane Gold Race roller rockers, KB flat tops, zero decked block, etc etc. I am also using Rhoads Lifters, which supposedly take a little radicalness out of the cam.
Either way, with the 3.55's and the "lower" stall, this thing still hauls ass, it's not a slug like everyone says it would be with that combo. I'm running 295/50/15 tires on the rear and this thing lights them up with just a light stab at the gas pedal. I also did a 50-100mph run with a video and it made it in 6 seconds (no track around here to run it on). Either way, I don't race the car, just built it to enjoy it and have been happy with this cam.

Yes Sir i agree that we need to look at what we are building and try and get the most. Please i am not here to say ( old school is the only way i just think that we all have a level of money we can spend and so on so use it for what works best for you and your car and the items you have at hand.!) I myself have up grades and i still would rather use a 292/509 mopar cam in my 448 cu in street car but that is me i wont everone to ues what they want but if you are like me and like the old school profile 292/509 cam i say use it.! By the way nice RR send pics when done and back on the road thanks for the reply.!
