MOHNTON, Pa. - The HEMI Challenge at The Dutch promises to again be one of the quickest races for HEMI-powered Super Stock cars, including Darts and Barracudas.
With a guaranteed cash purse of $10,000, and thousands more from the contingency program, it is one of the richest HEMI races in the country. It will be run Saturday, Oct. 15 as part of the 40th annual NHRA Pennsylvania Dutch Classic at Maple Grove Raceway.
Last year's winner was Jim Daniels, a dentist from Yardley, Pa., who successfully defended his championship by defeating Gary Wolkwitz in his Ray Barton-powered Dart. His winning pass was 8.342 seconds at 159.42 mph.
Daniels will be back this weekend as will plenty of challengers in Wolkwitz, Charlie Westcott Sr., Charlie Westcott Jr., Tyler Hard, Wendell Howes, Bill Brooks and Mike Booker.
The Challenge will begin at 12:30 p.m. Saturday with eliminations through the afternoon. There will be Super Stock time shots on Thursday and Friday.
Racing in all classes begins Thursday and will run through Sunday. Gates open at 8 a.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 8:30 a.m. on Sunday.
