My Mom in-law is wanting to clean out the old chicken house that is falling in. Lookie what's in the back corner. ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbs.gif) Not sure how we're gonna get them out though... I don't know too much about early Hemis. Any good sources/sites for info? Looking for the usual...casting numbers, how to I tell what year and displacement, etc. They've all been sitting for a while, but 2 of them are still bolted together. The one with the six carbs (Stombergs?) looks interesting. Any input? What do I do whith them???

An interesting book, if you can find a copy, is "Tex Smith's The Complete Chrysler Hemi Engine Manual" by Ron Ceridono. The copy I have was reprinted in 2004 so it should be around easily. Bryce ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/popcrn.gif)

my biggest question is...how did your mother-in-law have 3 hemi's in her chicken coop, and you didn't know about it until just now? or did you just get married? I'm picturing you as someone who's been married for 5-10, maybe even 15 years already, and mom-in-law is getting old and started asking questions about getting the place cleaned up now that she's getting older, in preparation of moving into a retirement home. I know exactly what my mother in law has at her house, and while it's not a Mopar, it's definitly a desireable vehicle! ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beer.gif)

OK, you got me! I've known they were in there for some time, but I was never really able to get back to them due to many generations of accumulated farm "stuff" that was piled in front/on top of them. But recently the ancient roof has started to fall in, so any thing of value has to come out soon. (Trust me, the three Hemis are about the only things of value in the whole building.)
That, and I was not really in a big hurry to get them out since I still really know what I'm gonna do with them. ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif)
Anyway, here's the decodes for those who are interested:
#1 C542-8-33831 is a 331 from a (late) 1954 New Yorker. It cam with the 4bbl and 7.5:1. It does NOT have the cast-in bell.
#2 C52-8-3043 is a 331 from a 1952 Chrysler. It origially had a 2bbl but now has the 6 Strombergs and twin-log manifold. It does have the cast-in bell though. ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/down.gif)
#3 NE 5520697 is a 331 from a 1955 New Yorker. It originally had a 4bbl and had the higher 8.5:1 compression. This one's in pieces, though and is a little rougher.
Thanks for all your help!!!

OK, I know it's been a while since I updated this thread, but the family and I finally got back to the farm to do some more cleaning up. ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbs.gif) I climbed in through a window to pull off the top-end stuff (carbs, intakes, distributors) in case something falls on the motors when we are pulling them out. The motor with the 6 carbs is very interesting--it is a Offenhauser 4062 model manifold. It's in 2 halves which are connected by 2 rubber hoses and hose clamps. I've not seen one like it. The carbs have a "Holley 2100" marking on them, and also a "94" cast into them. One of the carbs is identical to the others but has a "Ford" cast in where the "Holley 2100" is on the other carbs. Unfortunately, 1 of the 6 is missing. I will dig around some more. The funny part came in when I pulled the carbs off, the 4 corner carbs had been blocked off by a previous owner--he had cut up some old Falstaff beer cans and sandwiched them between the carbs and intake on all but the center 2 carbs. Also, the linkage was only connected to the center 2. I guess the power was too much for him!!! ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif) We're doing some more work today--I will update (hopefully with pics) later.

OK, so "Nana's" on-again, off-again sale is on-again. She has a date set around halloween. the farm auction guy comes in a few days. So that means my wife and got to spend a few more days sorting though tons of junk in the milk barn. I was finally able to get into the chicken house to get the carbs and intake off the motors--since the roof is now near total collapse. Got a few pics of the carbs and intake (carbs are pretty rough--some of the linkages are siezed ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frowwn.gif) ). Also took a few pics of the old generator, Swiss made ( ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shruggy.gif) ) cap, and porcelin Chrysler wires. Note the vintage Falstaff cans... ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbs.gif) Enjoy!

Vertex magnetos were a common race item in the 50's. At that time, there was no other available system that delivered as hot a spark at high rpm. Not as good at low rpm as a regular points ignition, but that wasn't a concern for a race car.
Info on the 94 carbs here (scroll down a bit):
