RR>X, I've been bugging ol' OzHemi to find me a right hand drive '69 Charger over in OzLand to build into a clone Daytona that would look exactly like this car did back in the day. I just don't think I could bring myself to butcher the quarter panels and nose! Here's another pic of it from back then...

yeah that would be cool you know i bet that with the grille opened up that wide i bet it cooled the engine alot better but if you haul the real one with the replica dont you think you might give the original an identity crisis

RR>X, I never thought about the identity crisis part. I'll have to think on that one as that's a good point. Is the Indy swap next weekend? I may have saturated the market at Columbus last weekend but I reckon there'd be some new buyers at Indy. I'll have to think on that one...
Hey Oz, that sounds like a pretty good idea actually! Seems like it would save a good amount of money but then again, there's still the whole dash conversion and all. It'd sure be nice if a nice 318 RHD '69 Charger popped up on the Mopar Market site!

Here;s a shot of my red, white and blue Bird at the 1991 Mopar Nationals racing Glen Peters Petty street Bird. Note that my car still had the silver vinyl graphics and not the prism graphics that are on it today. This pic is courtesy of 6PkRunner.

OneBad, I have that 91' Nats tape at my house, I just borrowed it off my friend! You guys raced those 2 birds about 5 times on the tape, pretty cool but they need some more horsepower. Yours ran 13's and his ran 14's every time, the 14 second car had open headers so it sounded like a dog. 13's is respectable for that big car but it would be cool to see those birds squaring off in the 12's! I enjoyed that big old New Yorker that back peddled for traction and still ran an 11.11.

ProSport, videos from the old days can be pretty darn cool to watch if ya ain't seen em in a long time. I have lots of plans for the ol' red, white and blue Bird to get it deep into the 12's but with the Aussie Daytona and the yellow Bird resto, it all kinda had to be put on hold for a while. Then there's the engine that's in the Bird right now that propels it to them low 13 second E.T.'s (13.11 best). It's been in the car totally untouched since 1986. This summer will be the 19th one that that engine has been pounded on. I know it's nothing radical but to push a 4,000 pound car to low 13's, you have to make a little bit of power. I did the Dyno thing at the Nats a few years ago and it was making 312 horsepower at the back wheels. The engine was built by my good friend, the late Mike Schenk from Mancini Racing. Mike must have put together a heck of an engine to put up with nearly 20 years of street and strip abuse. R.I.P. Mike, you're still da man in my book... The next engine that goes in the car will be built by Mr. Six Pack Bob Karakashian. I'd like to go with a Super Stock Hemi but more than likely, it'll end up being a wedge with a cross-ram. I don't want to have to cage the car and I want it to still be easily streetable. With one of Mr. Six Pack's cams and a little bit of compression and a pair of cross-rammed Holley's, I think 11.99 shouldn't be too awful difficult at all.

And, it's in pretty good shape too!
Okay, this car was owned by Duncan Ackerman, the fellow from Canada with the red project Daytona up the page. Here's the story on the Bird.
As a kid, the Bird was a car in the neighborhood where he grew up. Duncan's dad, a car guy himself would take him down to visit the Bird.
Years went by and the Bird's owner who bought the car in '71, got sick and passed away, The car was stored away in the shed for about five years. Duncan knew the car was there, but didn't want to bother the woman about selling the car. He also worked at a local parts store. One day, the widow came in out of the blue and offered the car to Duncan, knowing he was a car guy and loved the Bird as a boy. Duncan bought the car in '84 for $10k.
Duncan and his dad went over to get the car. The garage was so rickety, they pushed the Bird out first for fear the garage would collapse on it when they started the car up.
Pretty solid piece. Check out the front license plate bracket in the correct spot. I saw it restored and went for a ride in it in 1990, a real nice car. He's sold it. Don't know where it went. RM23U0A158602

RR>X, yeah I know 11.99 and quicker requires a cage. That's why right at 11.99 is what I'm shooting for. If it turns out to be a wee bit quicker than 11.99, I may look into a throttle stop for running at the track. Still not sure on the Indy swap meet but I do know I'll be passing through Indy about ten days after the swap on the way out to the Mopars At The Strip event in Las Vegas. Ya really got my curiosity up now!
