Shims would fit under bolts just as well, so I am not buying into stud use just for something like that.

Sure, they will, but try to do it when the car is moving down an assembly line.

There are 2 washers per stud in this picture.

3 Studs per side were used through 72 and 73 but not positive on 74's!
I have seen shims under studs in the past.
I think studs were used for ease of fender installation. The fender would stay on the body while reaching for fasteners and air tools.

So, would there still be seam sealer under between the inner fender and the fender flange when (as in the photo above) 2 washers were used? I wouldn't think it would be necessary or effective.

Yes studs are an easier and more cost effective way to assemble the fenders on a car. I have two questions then.

1. Why would Chrysler wait over a year to implement this process on an Ebody.

2. Has anyome ever seen an E Body with studs that was built between the last T/A being built and June of 1971.

Sealer would still be necessary to keep tire splash out of the engine bay.

Not sure on the 71's. Ken Mosier should know as he has had quite a few. I would have to go visit some friends(and friends of friends) cars.

Moparts member "Floyd"s 71 340 challenger with original paint has studs. I don't know the date though.

I never noticed - good catch. Just to clarify, that isn't my car. I harvested those pics from an eBay listing a couple years back. Car was in OH if memory serves.
