i'm one of them, running .004" junk through that mallory 250 is a bad idea. personally i think that's one of the best pumps money can buy.

he states he's losing fuel pressure while driving around the pits. if it's a filter problem it's all but plugged solid. imho the filter is not the issue, that's a fuel management issue. also i would never use anything but a screen in front of the pump. some people use paper elements which are meant to be used after the pump.

I'm running the inline Jegs/Summit filters. I think they list a couple sizes and I went with the largest that was compatible with Alcohol (incase I run E85 later). No issues so far, fuel pressure is rock solid:

Looks like you are running two different types of pumps, vane and gerotor. Could I ask why?

Dedicated fuel system for the Nitrous. They're different, because that what I had available at the time. No issues with either.

Update 10/21

I installed the Aeromotive 100 micron filter.
Pics show the new Mallory 250 pump.
Also upgraded the vent to -8

Heading out to the track soon,,,,,,

(also going to check the bypass)

Looks nice.

But I must mention that the inlet line should be bigger than the outlet on a racing fuel system. It should be a #10 inlet.

If it still gives you trouble, that's where I would look.
Good luck at the track!!

That will do for now - but please get that filter mounted solid - thats too much mass hanging off the pump by a AN fitting - You don't want that thing breaking off mid flight on a 9 second pass. Good luck! - you also might want to try the 37 squitters if you got time.

I had no idea the filter was that large,, , till i opened the box...yikes,,

I thought the same thing about finding something to "mount" it,,might fab up a bracket,,,something like this....

ps,,,i went to a 40 squirter ( 45,,,to 42,,,,and then 40 ) and the car really liked it,,,,
I have a set of 37's ready to go,,,going to experiment next time out,,, much more "responsive" off the line,,,good call at Norwalk....

I recently talked to an aeromotive engineer about this very subject. He said DO NOT run less than a 100 micron filter PREpump. They cavitate and reduce output. They will eventually kill the pump. They want a 100 micron prepump and a 40 micron post pump to protect the carb.

Are you still running two fuel pumps? If so I think you should mount the other pump behind the fuel outet like the new Mallory is now

Is the Mallory 140 filter "big" enough for the Mallory 250 pump ?

I wonder if the smaller, summit, inline filter was choking the motor / fuel delivery down the track... ??

40 micron is too small for in front of the pump. 100 is more like it.

I know alot guys will come on here and tell me I'm wrong, am I? Nope

Mallory recommends a 40 micron filter for their MA 250 pump....it's right in the instructions.

I believe the Aeromotive pumps are rotary vane so that might explain the 100 micron recommendation from them ?

From what I just looked up, Mallory recomends a 100 micron filter before the pump also. High performance fuel pumps require the same IMO. If yours is working OK with a more restrictive filter, then you are not making enough HP to notice.

To the OP, FWIW Kinsler recomends not to mount filters directly to a fuel pump, because vibration can cause the filter element to bounce around inside allowing dirt to get by. I believe most are held in place by springs.

Seems to me their I sheets are messed up in a few places...

...in one area they do say use a 100 micron filter...

Then in another area they say...
Quote:

To prolong pump life and efficiency, a high volume fuel filter
such as the Mallory COMP FILTERŪ Series 500 Fuel Filter
(Part No. 3500) must be installed between the pump and
fuel tank.

Then as it turns out, there's no such thing as part number 3500 The closest a person can get is 3500M, which is This, which is 40 microns, which contradicts what they stated earlier in the I sheet.

Nice.

Also compare figure 2 and figure 3 on the I sheet. Figure 2 is "With standard regulator" , Figure 3 is "with regular style fuel pressure regulator". I guess my question is, what is the difference between standard and regular?

Gee, could it be they meant "return" instead of "regular"?

Lots of mistakes on that I sheet!

All I know is,this. If you want a hi flow fuel system for gasoline, then it's not advisable to try to suck it thru anything much finer that 75-100 microns.

Sure if you have a reg old fuel pump for maybe 300 hp then you will never notice if your sucking thru a finer filter. Except for increased noise and shorter pump life.

Gas is hardest to move and vaporizes(cavitates) very easy. Give your pump plenty of unrestricted flow and it won't let you down.

If your pump has a #8 inlet, use a #8 straight X #10 male flare to attach your #10 supply hose. Your pump will thank you.
