My buddies kid wants to build a 97 or newer Dakota and install a 440 in it. Does anyone even make motor mounts, or headers for this? Also how big of a tire can fit in the wheelwell before tubbing it? For drag racing what can be done to the front suspension? Do these things have rack and pinions or steering boxes? Never looked at one before...

Thanks.

Jeff

Jeff, http://www.dakota-durango.com/forum/ is a good source for research.

To answer a few of your questions:

They have rack and pinion steering.
As far as I know, no motor mounts/headers, everything will have to be fabbed.
Biggest rear tire without tubbing will prob be 9".

A few notes:

The lug pattern will be an issue on rim selection.
They are very heavy!

Those are some of the reasons I chose a Gen II (the 97 - 06 (I think) are Gen III)

Kayfysh had a 440 in his truck.

IIRC he used abody fenderwell headers.

Does anyone know what others are doing for the 6 bolt hub to 5 bolt hubs on the front end? Rear is no big deal since we will be installing ladderbars, and a Dana60.

I'm an idiot. I forgot Kayfysh's truck was a 94 or so.

70cuda383 also has one.

the newer dakotas are a pain in the ass. I just bought a 94 because of this. I have a 10" slick on my 2000 with stock 15" dakota rims with plenty of room for more. There is not much out there to change the lug pattern up front but you could have the hubs and rotors drilled for 5 lug. A 440 will be a tight fit and will need custom headers.

gen 2 should be 91-96 and gen 3 is 97-04. A second gen is so much easier after having both.

I have a 97 but I did a lot of work to get it like you see it.I used S-10 control arms, spindles and brakes. I cut the dodge control arms and welded the S-10s to it moving each front tire in two inches and raking the caster back to 7 degrees. This allowed me to drop the front end.

I had to fab my headers and mounts. I used a 400 block and moved it back 6" trough the firewall and stroked it to 470.

You can run a 13.5 on a Gen III, I use 11" Hoosier slicks on 10" rims.

That right there is why I have a Gen III.

Adobedude, what did you do for spindles/hubs for 5 lug rims?

No you didn't, that's an impossible swap. I would start here to get an idea of the swap: http://www.bigblockdakota.com/ Thats GregZ's website, he also runs http://www.magnumhp.com/ which has some parts available for the swap. Someone mentioned www.dak-dur.com I would stay away from that place, they are going through a complete uproar over powers that be and everyone is leaving and deleting their info. I AM NOT saying that because I run a site, just giving you a heads up. Now, on my site I have a write up on some stuff that barely gets talked about when doing a small or big block carb swap into these trucks. You will need to sign up then read this thread: http://www.racemagnum.com/showthread.php?t=3119 As for 5 lug rotors, you will need custom hubs made or have your hubs and rotors redrilled for the 5 lug pattern. Rear end I would just swap in an 8 3/4" or 9".
