All rearends are "HP limited". Pro Stock doesn't run Dana 60s and Top Fuel doesn't run 9.5" rearends.

Application is everything.

Application is everything. I have a Strange Dana in my 416 Challenger T/A. I have a Dewco 9.5 in my race car. For the kind of racing most every weekend racers do the 9.5 is the best choice IMO. My brother has a fairly stout 8 3/4 in his BB Dart. He doesn't race it and therefore doesn't get much traction and it's fine for that.

To the OP.
If you have to ask, you need one.

come on guys, everybody knows the 8 3/4 is bullet proof. thumperdart has been running one forever.

True statement.............but as YOU said, my 1.36 60 foots aren`t hooking(as you can see from my launch) so THAT`S my saving grace. 8 3/4`s rule.............ESPECIALLY in slow cars like mine.

We are switching over to a Dana because they just look BAD A$$!!!!!! Really though, the cost is a huge variable. We were going to do the 9" because we are not biased at all. But for our application the Dana fit the budget the best and we know we cant hurt it. Oh yeah....It looks BAD A$$ to!!!!

I guess I'm one of the many dummies here. Oh well we all can't be geniuses . It amazes how much people blow about 9" rears. If they are so strong why didn't Ford put them in their 3/4 ton trucks? A good 9" third member will cost as much or almost as much as a complete Dana.

Maybe I shouldn't have used the word "dumb"

Just because your stuck in the 80s don't mean that everyone else has to be, a 9" is a much better choice for a race rearend, bar none!

I think you are forgetting that people come and go from this site all the time. New racers eager to learn come on here, read a quote like that and don't want to look dumb and then don't ask many questions. I don't mind responding every day to a different person the same info. To him it may very well be his first post, and probably is.
without the tolerance of many good people on this board, as well as else where, I would probably still be fighting my way out the the elevens instead of running in the eights.

and very well said, and nothing wrong with a little humor along the way. we deal with these posts on a monthly basis if not sooner.

Some body should have told me the dana 60 is unbreakable, I would never have had the ones that blew in my trucks replaced after they broke. Nothing is unbreakable choose what you need carefully per application. And by the way a 9" ford maybe a good rear end but I saw 5 of them go out in several Ford Mustangs using them back in the 70s guess they grew unbreakable with age.???

This is true.

My guess is that HP, torque and weight are the most significant variables.

What I'm getting at...............rather than posting blanket statements that chastise the various rearends............

maybe, we can collectively determine the limits of weight vs HP that each can take?????

Like what HP level can an 8&3/4 handle in a lite A-body vs a B-body???

My B-body is 3400 lbs, where's the limit with a 383/hi-stall auto or a 440/4 speed?

Help the dummy out here.

I think it would be hard to put a horsepower, weight limit on the 8 3/4. If so what can mine handle? 3740 lbs, 8" 5000 converter, foot brake, 35 sline m/w axles, spool, motive 3.91 gears, back brace and m/w caps and studs. I would asume that it would just be a guess?

For my car the Dana is the best choice, obviously not the best for all applications, but I never said that it was. If the 9" was the end all of rear ends they would be in everything with wheels. I'm going to go to the shop now and listen to some hair bands and polish the cover on my Dana.
