I tried my luck last night with a can of Krylon wrinkle finish and a heat gun. For $7.95 and about a half hour of work here's the result. Next time I'll try the powder coat, circling that cover for 5-minutes with the heat gun was a real pain in this old shoulder........

Looks good!

I'm still not seeing anything that looks close to the original finish.
I have to agree. The finish on your original '69 un-slienced air cleaner top looks more "egg shell" than wrinkle finish IMO too. Even the repo '69 air cleaner tops are wrinkle finish and I guess they should be egg shell instead. Lucky I didn't spend the money for the wrinkle finish powder coating after all, now I can still throw mine in the bead blaster and egg shell it the next time, I hear that powder coating is pretty durable and won't come off easily, the old double edge sword

Pretty much have to burn it off at high temp. That's what they do when they re-do a part at my powder coater's shop. But if you had it powder coated, you could always go back and put a light coat of paint over it if it lost its luster over time. Powder coating definitely is tough as H3LL when done right. I think for $50, that would DEFINITELY be the way to go.
Side note on powder coating:
The parts you buy (like stuff from U.S. Car tool, or the pwr steering brackets that are available on ebay, or the Schumacher parts I have received) have a cheaper powder coat on them (according to my shop) and the edges flake even brand new. My shop says they didn't use a "primer".... I didn't know there was such a thing. All I do know is that my shops powder coat is far better than the above mentioned examples. Thicker and no chipping on the edges.

nick, are we talking 69 or 70 wrinkle here, there are some variation
I've not seen an original '70 dual snorkel that was wrinkle so I don't have anything to compare. Mine are suede finish. I do have an original '70 340 air cleaner base and it has the same finish as the '68-69 one I posted earlier. I'll have to take some pictures during the day. I don't have the original lid for it.

Ok, I'm bringing up this thread again because I've found an original '70 dual snorkel air cleaner with a wrinkle finish. See the close up pictures below. I also dug up another original '71 dual snorkel air cleaner and it is a gloss black finish.
Nick, The 70 wrinkle is not eggshell like the others. It seems to resemble more the wrinkle that can be recreated with powdercoating or the spray can. Your pics seem to prove it. Nice pics either way.
