That's correct but the main shift cable still has to travel one more notch than a pushbutton, the Park cable is operated by a second mechanism in the shifter that is activated when the shifter passes by the Reverse position.
Even though the shift cable travels one additional notch it doesn't really do anything but push the manual valve into a deeper bore in the casting.
I guess that makes sense. Thanks for explaining it.
Polkat, I don't know about fitting a newer tranny to the poly block, but I do know the older trannies use a different tranny mount than the newer ones and I don't think they are interchangable.
When I had my 65 500, I pulled the old 318 and dropped in a newer 383 and 727. I mounted a B&M Megashifter under the console, attaching the shifter plate and boot to the top of the console, and used a tranny mount crossmember from a 78 Cordoba so I could use the right mount for the tranny. It did require a little modification but fit good.
