Doc is right, a sharply tuned thermoquad is the ticket. Do yourself a favor and buy a LM-1 or similar device. You will find it was the best money you ever spent. Dave

Pffft~!

He wants it to run down the highway not melt/warp the plastic TQ body all over the motor and go up in flames...

Used to pull down 14-15 with .528/284 mechanical cammed, Holley 750 3310 and header equipped '71 Barracuda. 3.23 gears made 70 mph a breeze.

With 4.10's you're going to be limited to 60mph if you want to see any better than 10.

Wow, a whole post of junk here.

Nothing wrong with the Tquad in COMPETENT hands.

I ran a set of 4.10's in my 300, got 15 mpg from Memphis to Tucson and I ran it at 75+ most of the way. It's all in the combo. I had a set of 3.23's in it that got WORSE mileage because of the combo.

I am running an 8.25 right now so gear changes are not as easy as an 8.75. Building an 8.75 later this winter, but right now the 8.25 stays with its 4.10's.

I am thinking something like 3.23's and some 28" tires with a Thermoquad for daily use.

I have three dragstrips that are all around 100-120 miles away so the drags will not be a daily thing.

Ten years ago I got the grand idea to move about 20 miles from anywhere. And they I got the grander idea to build a fast, older car. The grandest idea however was when I realized that they first two ideas were not so grand for daily driving a 40 year old car

It is all good. I will hopefully get to drive it this week

Keep in mind that this has been a 5 year project full of vigorous starts, and long periods of rest etc.

Lots of interesting discussion here. I must have asked the wrong question though.

I was just wondering what types of BB cars got what for mileage.

Sounds like we have some mean machines at 4 MPG and some mileage kings too.

The cam you are running is milder than mine was, which was mild too. I consider anything under .5" lift to be mild. I had a stick shift though, so converter slippage was not an issue for me. You have to remember that part of the reason OEM's went to lock up converters was because of highway gears, tall tires and mileage issues.

I once ran a 360 powered Dart with 2.26 gears, tall tires and a non-lockup trans, which got worse mileage than the 413 powered 300 with 4.10 gears, because the converter was always slipping at legal speeds.

You may wish to do a bit of math and see what your highway RPM might be. I did one for you, at 60 mph, with 3.23 gears and a 28" tall tire you are looking at about 2300 rpm, this is no converter slippage. As long as your converter stall speed is below this you ought to be ok.

I'm using the factory high stall convertor from behind a 360.

From what I gather, it should stall somewhere around 2200ish.

Others may know for sure.

Really?!? ...and just what part of it was "junk"!??!

I'm guessin' it was the part about the Thermobog.

Hey, if you wanna play around with obsolete parts that are warped, cracked and extremely difficult to get rebuild kits for, that's on you. If you want something that works and is currently available...

Doesn't mean my opinion is "junk".

How did you cruise at 75+ with 4.10 gears? I had 3.23 gears in my cuda and 75 mph was about my top cruising speed. You had to have had that thing wound out!

12 ....and 6 mpg ? .. gotsta' beez BERRI equipped !! ...

My 62 got 17 mpg with a 2.76 gear and ran mid-12's but at only 99 mph(because the motor was worn-out) ....but YET would get good-mpg driving to the 'Nats.

OF COURSE ...it was not BERRI equipped

CORRECTION ...it did have a BERRI intake.
