Steve, 40+ years is alot of wear and tear as well as natural deterioration. Just because the core does not leak today , it still has 40 years of crud inside and may fail tomorrow , a week or 10 years from now. I would do it while it is in my hands. It would be a bummer to have to take the box out again after it is all installed. The caulking seals have become hard like rock and I am certain that the foam seals are toast. I have done many boxes and NOT ONE had foam gaskets that could still go the distance. The inner doors have gone through heat and have dried up the foam to a brittle powder trust me. My father always told me that the best way is the long way. Don't cut corners with parts; but if you must, don't do it with parts that are a pain to remove. Jules

Don't you just love it when that snowball gets rolling. Although the heater box isn't the most difficult thing to remove.its' no cake walk either. Considering we ain't gettin any younger boys,,, and curling up under a dash to take a box back out doesn't sound like as much fun as it used to.
So, I have to agree with Jules, do it while it's in your hands and not have to worry about it later.

If you didn't catch it above 71 TA sells a great resto kit for the box. I bead blast and clear coat the box for an original like appearance. If it's an A/C box have the condenser checked too. Have fun.. Mike
Yes, his kit is the one I am buying. Best out there from what I understand (the only kit I would consider). Ya know, I was thinking about the finish of the fiberglass box and mine looks ok. It could look better with a buff. I'm not going to bead blast it, and I don't want to clear coat it either... but I know some time with a buffing wheel and the right product (and maybe even some 1500 grit sand paper) would help.

And the customer service is excellent too. I did not bead blast mine in order to preserve the china marker on the exterior. Just degreased it and then shot it with clear and it looked great. Installing the foam was easy. Biggest tip I can give is take lots of pictures so it is less of a puzzle to put back together. Craig

Don't you still have to find out why the blower did not run while normally connected? May be you have to resto the fan-switch too...
...one thing at a time! Well, not really... I'm up to my neck in individual projects on the car right now. As soon as I whittle them down a little, I'll tackle that.
The switch is a new repro piece. It didn't work with the original one either.
That's really all there is to it, isn't it? Except for maybe a fuse... which I don't think it is. Ideas anyone?

I buffed mine with compound at about 3k rpms. It improved it a good bit. Its in pretty good shape to begin with.
I tested a spot on top with clear and I don't believe the box was quite that glossy when new...? I still might give it a coat of clear in the end, but really it looks pretty good as-is for something that is tucked up under the dash anyway. At least if I leave it as-is I won't have to worry about yellowing or flaking of clear years down the line.

Pics?
And pics of the car too. Isn't it black now?
Didn't you say Lee Hodge did your car before you bought it. Lee NOW buys our heater box kits so they'll be correct for customers in the future.
I don't have any recent pics of the car aside from a few from months ago.
I'll take a pic or two of the box tomorrow.
Yes, Le and co. did my car back around 2001-2002. And yes, for only $35 buying your kit beats the hell out of half-assing it. Quicker/easier/much better result.

Did you take the box apart yet? If the resistor wire is broken, the motor won't get power.
Accually, on second thought, if the wire is broken you might only have high speed. Teh motor should still get full power. Check and see if you have power at the resistor.
It isn't broken, but I noticed that the resistor appeared to be bent down making contact where it shouldn't be. I corrected it, but we'll see if that's what the prob. was in a few weeks... Good point.
