I pulled the assembly from under the dash of my '70 Cuda for a couple of reasons, the biggest reason being that the vent/blower motor never worked when I tried to turn it on from the dash.

I hooked the blower up to a 12V source and it works. I am not sure what it is supposed to sound like (this sounds fairly loud), but it seems like it should either work or not, and it does.

What else should I be concerned with since it is out of the car right now? All the doors operate fine. I didn't have any coolant leaks before, so I'm not concerned there...

You may want to check out the foam gaskets. I am quite sure they have turned to powder.
If the motor sounds that loud , it most likely needs to be opened and overhauled.

Strangely, the seals appear to be just fine. Not sure about those foam gaskets... I'll check tomorrow.

I am sure you are right about the motor, Jules. I will be in touch with you this week. I also disassembled my steering column like we discussed earlier this week and I'd like to send that shaft in to have the arm plated. I'll probably just box it up with the blower motor and have you do both.

Upon further inspection, I do see signs at the firewall on the interior side of slight corrosion. What must I do to make sure the heater core is in good working order? I have NO clue where to even start.

Edit: I just discovered this wonderful thing called "Google".... learned a lot about heater boxes. I guess I just walked into a full blown heater box resto.... dang it....

If your heater box is undamaged, especially the lip on the air outlet by the pass side feet, be aware the box is very valuable $1000+ and EASILY damaged if you're thinking about shipping out to be redone.

Steve,
40+ years is alot of wear and tear as well as natural deterioration.
Just because the core does not leak today , it still has 40 years of
crud inside and may fail tomorrow , a week or 10 years from now.
I would do it while it is in my hands. It would be a bummer to have to
take the box out again after it is all installed. The caulking seals have
become hard like rock and I am certain that the foam seals are toast.
I have done many boxes and NOT ONE had foam gaskets that could still go the distance.
The inner doors have gone through heat and have dried up the foam to a brittle
powder trust me.
My father always told me that the best way is the long way. Don't cut corners with parts;
but if you must, don't do it with parts that are a pain to remove.
Jules

Don't you just love it when that snowball gets rolling.
Although the heater box isn't the most difficult thing to remove.its' no cake walk either. Considering we ain't gettin any younger boys,,, and curling up under a dash to take a box back out doesn't sound like as much fun as it used to.

So, I have to agree with Jules, do it while it's in your hands and not have to worry about it later.

Well, it is obvious that this box was gone through back in '01 when the car was first resurrected. The heater core is beautiful and tested perfectly for no leaks. No trash or anything in there.

There was no caulk of any sort anywhere. Instead of those foam gaskets, there were strips of one sided hardware store type door strip insulation. (I'll be buying a heater box kit from you, Jim). The box is very nice with one minor blem down by the feet. I can fix it easy.

I am redoing it the right way. I just shipped the blower motor, Jules. I'll start the hardware refinishing aspect soon and await my parts.

This is definitely one of those car related projects that get overlooked by most, but I'll feel gratification in knowing how everything works, and that it is all in working order.

If you didn't catch it above 71 TA sells a great resto kit for the box. I bead blast and clear coat the box for an original like appearance. If it's an A/C box have the condenser checked too. Have fun.. Mike

Yes, his kit is the one I am buying. Best out there from what I understand (the only kit I would consider). Ya know, I was thinking about the finish of the fiberglass box and mine looks ok. It could look better with a buff. I'm not going to bead blast it, and I don't want to clear coat it either... but I know some time with a buffing wheel and the right product (and maybe even some 1500 grit sand paper) would help.

Don't you still have to find out why the blower did not run while normally connected? May be you have to resto the fan-switch too...

After all these years having a 440 I realized that this means having an attitude... and a budget.

And the customer service is excellent too.
I did not bead blast mine in order to preserve the china marker on the exterior. Just degreased it and then shot it with clear and it looked great.
Installing the foam was easy. Biggest tip I can give is take lots of pictures so it is less of a puzzle to put back together.

...one thing at a time! Well, not really... I'm up to my neck in individual projects on the car right now. As soon as I whittle them down a little, I'll tackle that.

The switch is a new repro piece. It didn't work with the original one either.

That's really all there is to it, isn't it? Except for maybe a fuse... which I don't think it is. Ideas anyone?

I buffed mine with compound at about 3k rpms. It improved it a good bit. Its in pretty good shape to begin with.

I tested a spot on top with clear and I don't believe the box was quite that glossy when new...? I still might give it a coat of clear in the end, but really it looks pretty good as-is for something that is tucked up under the dash anyway. At least if I leave it as-is I won't have to worry about yellowing or flaking of clear years down the line.

Pics?

And pics of the car too. Isn't it black now?

Didn't you say Lee Hodge did your car before you bought it. Lee NOW buys our heater box kits so they'll be correct for customers in the future.

Did you take the box apart yet? If the resistor wire is broken, the motor won't get power.

Accually, on second thought, if the wire is broken you might only have high speed. Teh motor should still get full power. Check and see if you have power at the resistor.

The only problem I had with my heater box restoration was that the cover was warped and didn't fit onto the main box perfectly. The strip calk that comes in the kit seals the two halves anyway so I'm not really worried about it. Jim makes a nice kit.

I don't have any recent pics of the car aside from a few from months ago.

I'll take a pic or two of the box tomorrow.

Yes, Le and co. did my car back around 2001-2002. And yes, for only $35 buying your kit beats the hell out of half-assing it. Quicker/easier/much better result.

I am closing in on finishing it (again, and again)... The suspension/interior came out again after this pic when I got the car home (long story).

The motor/trans is all redone sitting on a freshly powder coated k frame waiting for me to tie up loose ends before I roll it back and bolt it up to where it belongs. Essentially, I just need to tidy up wiring, and slap the drive train/suspension in (and when I do, my parts for the box/column should be back from Jules to finish it off).

It isn't broken, but I noticed that the resistor appeared to be bent down making contact where it shouldn't be. I corrected it, but we'll see if that's what the prob. was in a few weeks... Good point.

You guys got any advice on a paint that matches the brown fiberglass? I had a small repair I had to make and now I need to spray a small area.

Wow, awesome job!

My damaged area was MUCH smaller and I already have the repair work done. I just need to experiment with some brown mixes to finish it off. Fortunately, mine is a small enough area where I don't have to worry about the "strand" imitation strokes.
