Just out of curiosity...what do these marking on this diff mean ?

As well...I "think" it's E body It's around 61.5" drum to drum (well, axle flange to flange since there are no drums on it..) and the spring perches are like 46.5" center too center. Oh, and the brakes are 11 x 2.5" .....would that make it an E body one?

Thanks

And this is what it looks like..

If it's an E-body rear, it's from a 70 model car. The parking brake cables both run to the drivers side on 70's. It's possible that it's a C-body rear. The only difference I have been able to find between the C and E housings is the placement of the brass T for the brake lines. I'll have to look under my Challenger,and then at a C barge rear out back to be sure. Right now it's dark,it's raining, and I'm lazy!

The yellow "F E" means: F = 1970, E = E-body. I have "F B" on my 1970 Coronet. Fairly common markings. Hope this helps Dave.

11-10-X on the housing is the rear axle assembly date {11/10/69}... ...And the yellow 079 on the axle tube is a quick assy line reference for the rear...This code should be on the build sheet also...

I don't see an 079..Maybe an 078 or an 073...

073 = 1970 E body 3.23 open w/11" drums a 489 case & 7290 yoke

078 = 1970 E body 3.91 Sure Grip w/11" drums a 489 case & 7290 yoke

079 = 1970 E body 3.54 Dana 60

Pretty handy to be able to tell that from that code!

Would you happen to know the 3-digit number code for a '68 B-body 3.23 open with drums? Looks like my '68 Hemi Charger R/T has a number of 242 or 042 on the housing, but can't make it out perfectly...

The hand draw markings on a rear end could be as different as the individuals who were marking them. One person would scribe them to accommodate their method of identification and another employee (different shift) might do it differently. The exception to this is the date stampings that are done in yellow or white. Those were pretty much universal throughout the run for the rear end setup. Most of the variations you find is with the hand written markings. I personally have seen 6 or 7 different markings that were put on the round part of the painted black housing. Anything from letters to check marks or "X's" etc... It also might have been something that changed during different months of the year. There certainly is nothing better than the original markings to use as a reference!

Bingo...
That's what I thought............ NOW, if I can find the stencils for that.. I know Sylvain carries products such as this for hoses and such, but I need to verify rear end housings... Anyone out there have sources for the stencils?
This just verifies to the na-sayers I've come across what I've told him, not all hemi cars had suregrips...

Thanks alot........

Those originals are usually pretty sloppy. You could just make yourself a potato stamp.
