You're just looking at the wrong dot, the outer dot for lining up with cam dot is stamped very lightly is all.
Ouch you might be right on that. If so (and I'm not doubting you at all, because that seems from memory now that you mentioned it, how they are) you just made the poor guy feel really bad now about that mistake.

Yep thats what i did and it cost me a motor. they had the dots reversed. big dot on the keyway and the speck of a dot by the tooth that you need for the match up. couldn't see the speck even with the blowup the GTX did. you can see how big the one pine needle looks in the center of the pic. now i have this funny looking rod. i don't think i can use it again.

Geez Gary you sure got a good humor about the whole ordeal. I'd be
But I guess what can you do but live and learn.

GTX your right i have to be ok with this for the moment. but this issue is far from over. that gears set is CLEARLY marked wrong. i am not naming any names yet. i have went around town and took pics of many other timing sets and even have one of that brand that is marked correctly. so if i have to go to the next level i have all my ducks in a row. as some people would say. i will probaly get my block back this week and it will be time to get the new parts again. then i will find out how it's going to go from here.

Thanks, that is the PowerHouse/CompCams 16" Degree wheel. Nice on the engine stand, but too big for in-car use. I have two of the cheap small degree wheels, but I decided to splurge on the thick aluminum 16" one since I have been building more engines lately (currently working on two big block strokers.) I think Moroso has an 18" degree wheel? Other nice PowerHouse tools in the picture is the crankshaft turning socket that the degree wheel mounts to, and the dial indicator holder that installs into the lifter bore.
