My inner-child thimks you are a CHEAPskate !

But so am I ....I put a set of NEW pads on a set of scored rotors ... on my diesel dually. They work FINE .... but the last set only went 40k miles !!

They just wear-into the grooves of the rotor.

My standards for things change when I sell a car VS ones that I keep. I dont mind experimenting with my own life, but all my life I have been burdened with the curse of guilt. If someone got hurt because I cheesed out on a car that I sold, I couln't deal with it.
I have also put new pads on skanky rotors. My 74 Dodge Camper 9000 uses an oddball 1 ton style rotor and they are not the easiest to find in the wrecking yards.

I might reuse pads if they haven't been overheated, but I never reuse rotors or drums without machining them. That makes for a crappy brake job for sure. You will never have the stopping power because the new pads wil never breakin properly. They will squeal, overheat and won't provide the stopping power needed in a emergency stop.

To the OP, I'd consider reusing the pads if they weren't hot and then keep a eye on them and replace them before they get into the rotor. But then your rotors will need be to be machined before the next set of pads.

Breaking in brake pads are very important to get maximun braking power and most importantly, so your new rotors don't over heat and warp.

If you don't resurface your old pads, they won't seat correctly to your new rotors.

I do brake work on 19 vehicles for 25 years now, even have my own truck lathe.

I bet you could outfit all the vehicles listed in your signature with new brake pads for $100. Keep in mind for that price you'd have to install them yourself, so it might risk staining those pants.

Rock Auto or places like AutoZone sell pads for next to nothing. Try checking there.

I just did some front disc brakes and a set of drum brakes last week, don't have the recieving copies in front of me, but one or the other was 59 bucks a set jobber cost. I don't know what kinda of pads your gonna get for 100 bucks for all his vehicles?

Ah I just read what I wrote... I meant 100 each.

I would AGREE with you that the way I did that is not the BESTest way of doing things ....but I originally did-this as a stop-gap measure ...and then never changed it after I found out that the braking-power was not hindered.

And I have done some HD driving ... in the mountains of western PA(the worse I have seen in a while), mountains of WA and towing a variety of trailers.

As I said ...I got about 40k miles on the pads(they were the AZ 18$? pads) ....and will be changing those directly - before the truck goes out next.

As far as using OVERheated pads? .. on my daily-driver Caravan ... I had a calipher hang-up and even "blued" a rotor. Freed that up .... no probs since.

get a flat piece of wood and some sandpaper and flatten those grooves off the pads. no problem

It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it's got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas.

If you insist on the old pads, just scuff them on some slightly rough concrete, or coarse sanpaper, install them, they will seat just fine.

Belt sander?

What does sanding your belt have to do with brake pads?!?
