Can a car with a 904 or 727 be flat towed with all 4 wheels on the road? Looking for something behind an RV.

Noot without takin g the drive shaft down. Unless very slowly and very short distance. There is no oil flow in the transmission so Damage will be done.

Clean it, if it's Dirty. Oil it, if it Squeaks. But: Don't fix it, if it Works!

There's no tranny fluid being pumped to lube the trans when the torque converter is not being rotated by the eng & the d shaft will engage the trans w no lube. Drop the driveshaft & you'll be fine

You can get a pump that will push ATF through the trans ... but that can be costly.

I have an RV ...and when I tow a TOAD .. it is my stick-shift minivan.

How is it that I have been so lucky? I have towed with a dolly SEVERAL Mopars with the rear tires on the ground and never had a trans problem. I know that it has been stated that it can be a problem, but I have yet to see it.

I have dollied as much as 50 miles at freeway speeds. Some vehicles that I used in a home movie were stunt cars that I towed 20 miles several times.

Yes, you've been very lucky to not burn up transmissions.
A 904/727 uses the torque converter to drive the transmission oil pump. So if the engine is not running to spin the torque converter, then the pump is not pushing fluid through the trans.

Never had any problems with a guy I hung around with...We flat towed his car down to Atco and when we crossed the bridge into Jersey we fired the car up and let it oil and then finished the drive...When we got there he unhooked it and ripped off a few high 10 second passes then towed it back home...Hundreds of miles like this with NO failures. 45-50 miles at a time...

U R lucky toooooo ....

All I can say is LOOK in a FACTORY service manual ... it says something like IF you have to tow past a mile or two .. you should pull the D-shaft.

Yeah you can the Dakota but you had bater read the manual about putting the transfer case in Neutral first so that the transmission isn't being turned. Not for 2 wheel drives.

The early 60's and prior torqueflites came with a front AND a rear pump, so those you could tow on all 4's no problem. You could also push-start them. Either the engineers decided not many people were towing/push starting or the bean counters decided it because in the early 60's they dropped the rear pump and carried that design through. I see some guys towing fwd's on tow dollies, seems to be the easiest way around this if you must run a vehicle with an automatic trans. I'd say your only safe options are a stick shift on a tow bar, fwd auto on a dolly or rwd auto on a trailer.

Okay, so many here say that I have been lucky, but WHO has actually experienced a failure? What happens? Lets say a man tows the car and pulls it off of the dolly. He jumps in, starts the motor...and then what? Slow to engage? No reverse? No forward gears or just slippage? Is the flat tow supposed to cause immediate destruction like a 8500 RPM neutral drop into drive or more like adding 40,000 miles of wear in 20 miles?

It's simple. The factory says NO.
Flat towing is stupid except for emergencies or with a properly prepared toad/RV.

See? simple!

I have see internals seize do to lack of lubrication. the bushings are especially vulnerable seizing to the shafts. Also seen facing off of the discs.
You can run your engine for a while on oil splash if the oil pump goes out too. (for a while)
Go ahead and tow it is your transmission and your money. You don't need to listen to anybody. You may be lucky like in playing Russian Roulette.

When I flat towed my Duster(over 100 miles) more than once,I just started the engine and let it idle the whole time.

Yep - 5 minutes to take out 4 tiny bolts, tape the joint and hang the shaft.
