I picked up My rear engine dragster a few years ago. The guy had a shortie 727 and a 493 RB with Indy Heads...He was currently going 5.40-5.30's in the 8th mile 60ft was in the mid to upped 1 teens or so.
I knew a 3 speed wasnt going to cut it in the dragster...It was a very heavy for dragstr with driver well over 2000+ lbs. But the driver is big guy too 6'4 and 270 lbs.
Anyways
I purchased the Power Glide Hand Book By Carl Monroe (sp)?
Anyways. I went through about 6 cases before finding a good one. Purchased a shortie stock 1.76 gear set. Add a Billet clutch hub, new servo, 300M 350 input shaft picked up some thin clutches and plates to fit as many clutch discs possible in the front IIRC it was 7, and ended up with 5 out in the rear. Added a deep pan and trans brake. Set pack clearance to about .100-.120 in the rear, and about .070-.090 in the front, bought a used Coan converter, thow'd this junk together..First time I built a Glide. Went out and ran way down in the 4's in the 8th mile, and pulled consistent ONE flat 60 ft....This wasnt no one pass wonder either, dead heat in July...
Two seasons later, the trans is still working fine with nothing more than stock parts.

For the guys who probably picked up E/T in moderately heavy cars, with moderate HP over a 727..its simple...the cars wasnt set up properly, and was spinning..something...

No magic stall at all. My first converter was a Dynamic that Sean supposedly had set up for my combination. It was a 9" unit that went to 4800. I had also talked to JW and they just happened to call me back a few weeks later to see if I ever bought a converter. After telling him my combination he said no way did I need a 9" and 4800 was too tight. He told me he could build me an 8" that would run much better than the Dynamic unit. I took a chance and ordered it and sold my Dynamic. I put it in and it went to 5200-5300 and picked up .5 and 5 mph. It also worked great with nitrous. With a glide you want it to stall within 1000-1500 rpms of where you shift. If you shift at 7000 you want a converter that will flash to 5800-6000 when you launch the car.

Gotcha, does this 1000 -1500 stall below shift rpm theory apply to all cars regarldess of weight ,hp ,etc.Im not trying to ask a dumb question ,im just trying to learn .A convertor swap is needed on my car as well ,just wanting to get one thats right for my car ...

Well I thought this thread would be in the history books by now..
All you Street/Strip boy's need to stay with the 727 3 speed..3000lb cars need it.. for those cars in the 1800 to 2800 weight class run a Glide..
The Glide is a very consistant tranny for my Daytona 572" 118 60ft times (every Time) unless the track can't hold the beast..
5500 stall shift @ 7200/7400 and drive it out the back door. all the rails have to run the # to win..

With comments like yours ,this thread will continue to be debated.
I'm 3400 lbs with a glide and most likely faster than you.

The numbers I was told are 45 hp to turn a 727 and 18 for a Powerglide.

Just curious but have you run a good glide set up in your current car? Its not like Im a chevy guy or anything, hell even my Mustang is Mopar powered. I have run a 904, 727, and a glide all in the same car with the same motor and tried several different converters with each. My car is 3390 lbs and was fastest with the glide. So in my case a 2 speed is faster than a 3 speed. I do run a 1.98 first gear which helps get the car moving but still only have 2 gears. Im only telling you what worked best for me after lots of testing with all 3 trannys.
