If cheaper stuff is the goal why are all the glide lovers want to run a mopar? Buy an 85 camaro, its cheaper than a dart. I would rather have the TH400 than a glide, its a matter of gear ratio selection. Also if they need more room for the converter why not just space the trans out a little. The whole "bragging about gear ratios" thing is the guys that want to brag they have 4.88s in the chevy or 4.10s in a mopar, it just seems to me the chevy guys at the shows think it is a kings crown when they put 4.88 gear in there camaro and mopar guys all like to brag about the 4.10s they have. I don't know why but I hear those comments at every show I go to, "its got 4.88s" with a huge smile on there face

that explains it right there
for the most part this thread is about race cars not show cars. racers could care less what axle ratio they have as long as their car is in the lanes at the end of the day while everyone else is watching. like i said from the beginning...it all depends on your goals.

I run a glide in my car because thats what works the best. If you have a car that makes good power you dont need a 2.45 first gear. A glide only takes about 16 hp to operate vs. about 50 hp for a 727. Ive run a 904, 727, and a glide and have had the best ET and least amount of problems with a glide. Ive also got a smallblock Mopar powered 86 mustang coupe and its got a glide as well along with an 8.8 rear. Why? Because a glide takes less power to operate than a 727 and its stonger. An 8.8 is more efficient than a 8 3/4 or a Dana 60. I know some are hard core Mopar guys but I run what makes my car the fastest with the least amount of problems.

The NHRA Competition Eliminator guys will be pissed after reading this post. Most of them as GM guys run pro-flite trannys (AKA HYBRID 904's). I am sure they will be glad to know they can pick up the performance of their cars by switching to a glide.
Go to any Outlaw race or heads up series and see what 95% of the cars are running. Money isn't an issue on those cars and if there was something faster then they would be running it. I can guarantee if a pro-flite was faster and more durable than a glide they would have one. I have no doubt that a pro-flite is quicker than a 904 or a 727 and I think there are applications where they make sense for some racers, but I would bet in most cases a glide set up is a LOT less money and more durable for most racers. I can run 5.80's in my street car for several years and not touch the tranny so I would say they have their place too. There's a reason they are so popular.

Please. I felt this topic was about who ran power glides and I said OK, stay out of it. After watching the last few comments, I had to chime in. I run a Pro Flite and it out performed the glide by 0.15 faster. Paul Ricci with a well sorted out SS/AM car with a glide (former record holder)also picked up 0.15 over the glide as well with his pro flite. Pretty much most Comp eliminator guys run one as they have proven to be faster than the glide. As far as durablitiy goes, Lonnie Johnson In Comp runs a Larry Morgan Hemi with a Pro Flite and I asked him about how many passes he gets out of his and he said it has 150 runs right now and still going strong. That is with almost 1400 Hp. As Fred stated they are expensive but they are reliable. Everyone should run what they want and move on. I'm going to keep my 3 speed as it works for me. My car likes it and my 4 link can take anything I throw at it. That's my story and I'm sticking to it! Now pass the popcorn!

Lots of misinformation here. Go watch the all motor cars run heads-up at Milan and tell me how many PGs you see. There was one guy with a Chevelle running one for a while. It ran 8.90s, while the fast cars ran 8.40s. PGs are cheap, which made them popular. Like every other thing Chevy, there's a million of them around so the volume lowers the cost. A PG makes sense in a lightweight dragster or in a bracket car that wants to compare notes with all of the other PG users, exchange parts in an emergency and save money. But in a heads-up car, or in a car where getting the most performance out of it matters I don't think PG is the answer.

Hmmm most of the outlaw cars i know of run bruno/lenco's, lenco drives, or rossler 2.10 or 1.96 or turbo 400's then the rossler glide which is made from a turbo 400, then a powrglide but most of the glide cars run 1/8th mile. Cmon guys forget about the first gear i went thru that 50 posts ago. Its about the close gear ratio. Anybody running a good turbo is using a 2.10 or 1.96 first gear.
