I was just going to post and ask if anyone had a pic of the 8 3/4 rear inspection mark on the rear. I think it's an X with a circle around it . I searched for it but nothing hit. Sorry to hijack the thread.
I don't believe there is any consistent inspection mark.. It varied depending on many variables... I've seen the circled X, I've seen A's B's etc.. My Challenger has a large FE on the back....

3.91 gears is one black paint daub, with an orange for sure grip, 1.375 stem.
3.91 gears, two orange daubs (for 3.91) another for sure grip, with an 1.875 stem. The 078 probably meant an 8-3/4 with 3.91 gears and would have been found on the build sheet.
This is from a 1990 Guide to Muscle Cars magazine. The article was on Roger Gibson and his knowledge of 1970 cars specifically.
The pic hers is a 71-B-Body.

Los Angeles built 70 Cuda.
That's surprising, mine is from my Challenger built at Hamtramck.. Obviously the same guy marked them with the shape of that E

741 case - 3.23 open rear This was all I could find on the tear down for the center section. There were more numbers in yellow on the forward side of the axle tube , just not visible in these pics.
