Hello guys...this is an old thread...just joined and can't figure how to post? Anyways I am getting these heads in two weeks...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/300774739401?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

They are late 1977 810 castings....race versions...I read somewhere on the early W2's you have to use an assembly like the Harlands...I do not have the heads in front of me but I am getting them shipped here soon. who knows the offset? .775 or .500? I'm just trying to get a head start so I can computer shop until they arrive..
Thanks
Jim

Ok, Well I have to call them I guess...I just read that all W2 heads made after 2002 are machined for the T&D rockers...I just want to make sure I get the right stands/shafts/and offset right the first time so I can slap these on and go...These were on the shelf for fifteen years, just came out of retirement and got put back together...the have been sitting a year.

I have the HS on my W5's I'm pretty sure you are going to need the .775 offsets. But don't expect to just bolt them on and go, they all need to be "adjusted" side to side to center the roller tip over the valve stem.

Do all the Race W2 heads need the .180 offset shafts and stands? The new castings and the old castings? I know T & D are considered the better rocker....but my old man had to send his back three times and it to weeks for them to get his right on his Indy head small block...I've also seen guys order them and then they need take some metal off them to make them fit.
The W2 heads made after January of 2002 are machined to accept the T&D rockers I guess... I do not want to have to machine my heads or machine new rockers... That's what I mean by bolt on and go..So I'm looking for a rocker set that I can install adjust and go. My heads are made in 1977/78 so I am not sure if they are machined the same as the newer W2s on the rocker pedestals..

With the long valve heads without rocker stands you need the offset shafts and stands. But like I said, I don't care what you buy they simply are not a bolt on and go proposition.

You MIGHT have to mill the pedestals to get the proper
geometry ... remember these are Mopar heads and nothing
is bolt on and go.... if they have MP springs on them
I would get new springs the mopar springs are too weak

Since they're the older set just get some HS rockers and adjust from there. Shouldn't have to machine anything. I bought '76 heads myself and looked around for a set of MP 1.5s They do come up for sale every once in awhile. Could put an ad in the SB Wanted section. The 1.6s are harder to get; at least for me I'm still looking. But if you don't want all that just buy the HS rockers from Summit and call it a day. At least they still make em; easier to replace.

I wouldn't buy them from Summit. Todd at Competion Wedge will give you a better deal and better service too.

A very thin roller bearing between each rocker on the shaft

Like a "lazy susan" bearing turned 90°?

That's a Torrington bearing.

I agree. Just giving him the easiest option. Personally if I had to do it all over again I'd start with brand new heads and get them worked over by a pro. My '76s did need some work and the people I talked to about getting them ported said "nope" Castings not so good back then. But what for they are much better than my old X heads. Top end mucho better.

W2's were and still are a nice head and really stepped up the way small block mopars ran. Every STOCK set that I have had on my flowbench max out at about 260cfm and then back up at higher lifts. Perfect for a 520-580 lift cam. There main problem is like stated above " core shift " and cracking problems. The set I ported and used on my duster maxed out at about 308cfm with a 2.02 valve but cracked by the W2 on the outside of the head when bolted down and then up thru the intake port 6 weeks later. Mine were the older style (basic) that used the stock shaft style hold-downs. Lots of work for something like that so I doubt if I will ever try another set. I ported a set of edelbrocks and installed them on that short block and the car runs the same ET.

1970 Duster
Edelbrock headed 408
5.984@112.52
422 Indy headed small block
5.982@112.56 mph
9.38@138.67

I just put a set of TD's on my Commando heads and you will have to adjust the geometry at the least,,and yes, I agree that Todd @ Competition Wedge can give you as good a deal as anyone and if there is a problem he has the knowledge to understand what you need/want as opposed to the big stores like Summit and Jegs.

Thanks for all the replies.. I know the old castings are not as great ( fear of porting) but I have an old vintage draw through turbo kit I want to run with a predator carb..I just didn't want to run the turbo through my stock 318 puke heads... although I have to use a stock 273 manifold on the drivers side these heads will still be a dramatic improvement over my 318 heads...( gonna have to do some grinding on the exhaust manifold and find some good gaskets )
