It has been my experience that almost all of the factory assembled aluminum parts that I have stripped and restored were primed with a greenish cast primer, real close to the DP40 epoxy from PPG. It was applied very thick too. They may have used that to gain better paint adhesion over the alloy panels. Of course my '65 A990 Coronet has this same green primer sprayed all over the inside of the front end as well as under the original top coat. Perhaps the green made for a better base since my Dodge is paint code EE1 dark blue metallic. A different primer color would certainly affect the topcoat. I have some factory 64 plymouth aluminum parts still wearing the original robin egg blue and it seems there is no primer at all under the top coat??? The Plymouth parts are for sale if anyone is interested. JC.
