The only pictures I have of the car (3X3 prints) are when we put the Hemi engine (which came out of my 1967 Hemi GTX) in the car and a couple of pictures after it was painted as a race car. The only parts left from the 1970 challenger are the Del Amo Dodge license plate frames.

I saw a 4 barrel T/A - AAR air cleaner, that looked just like that one at Carlsile, about two years ago. The seller was calling it the prototype air cleaner for what was to be the production air cleaner for the 4 barrel equipped 71 Challenger T/A. If thats the one you are discussing here. The same vendor had a complete 1969 383 Cuda engine,as you probably know the drivers side motor mount is completely different on those blocks for big block a body cars.

I dont miss much at Carlisle...dont know how I didn't see that....sure wish I stumbled on to that one for a look see... [/quote

The one I seen was an original peice,it looked exactly like a regular T/A-AAR sixpack air cleaner, but it was for a four barrel. It had a block off plate on it,with wingnuts. It looked like a 40 year old original peice, not something someone fabricated. If you walked from the show field at Carlsile, towards the fence at the back of the swapmeet,it was in the row at the bottom of the hill. I vend in row G,so it was at least,I/J row,or the next one.

I sold my air cleaner to Galen for $300.00. I guess it would be worth a lot more today. When I sold him my air cleaner to him he wanted to know all about the car. I told him all I could remember about ordering it.

Jason, the untra rare Hemi T/A wide lip lid for a T/A hood. This has got to be the rarest of all the lids that Chrysler (FRAM) ever produced. I have never seen one for sale at any event and I have walked many a mile with Mccannix at these flea markets. They can be made via some creactive metal work by using an A12-T/A six barrel lid and moving some metal around so the holes will line up on Hemi spacing on the carbs.

Jason
I only ever owned one original wide lipped oval Hemi TA lid. It was NOS painted black, stamped "Made in Canada".
It came from Fram with the first Hemi TA base I got. It went as a unit with one of the bases I sold in the mid 80's.
I saw one other the very same at the Mopar Nats about 20 years ago. The guy was carrying it with a real Hemi TA base. A bunch of guys, myself included tried buying both but he was more less showing the assembly off to some of the vendors.

On a side note since you couldn't get AC with a Hemi car or 6 pak E-body fresh-air, but AC was an option with a 340/383 Challenger.... it would make sense that the air cleaner that made it to Hamtramk for such a car built would be the type Dan has and not a 4bbl shaker with the TA ring spotwelded.... and likely hand built in the Fram "hobby shop".
Dan's car is after all coded for both AC and N94 and as he says the TA front lip would interfere with the compressor.

Kevin - Bob Langley's black 71 Hemi Challenger came with one from the factory. It was a N-96 car and it had the wide lip lid. He still has the lid as far as I know.

I would sure love to buy that lid off Bob, he could get some of the money back I got from him for parts I sold him for the Hemi Challenger.

I was running this in my mind that if his car came with that lid on a N96 car from the factory, then there might of been a Hemi T/A breather sitting at the factory ready to be installed on a 1971 Hemi Challengers. Then again I think Fram shipped the units complete from Fram to the Plant and maybe someone at Fram just sent it on it way with the wrong lid on a Shaker set up. I will have to look up the Build date on Bobs Hemi Challenger. Always like that Challenger.

There was a factory N94 HEMI Challenger living near me a few years ago. His uncle bought it from some collection, not knowing what it was at the time. When i saw it, it was supposedly the only build sheet/fender tag documented N94 Hemi Challenger. I believe it was sold due to divorse. I heard that it is the one at Restorations By Julius?????

Mccannix you know the base is just a purchase away now, with a little creative touches just like the T/A hemi base I have. The lid is a lot harder to do. Once all the work is done it is hard to tell if the breather is the real deal or not when its on the car,it if ever makes it there on mine.

Nice job Rick.

So, it's possibly that Blue 71 Hemi Challenger's original factory installed air cleaner was probably the N94 TA Hemi assembly that John D bought! Maybe Downer suspected the same thing and wanted it back with the car.

According to Walt himself that car never was an N96 or N94 car also backed up by the b/c sheet. Plus he proceeded to shaker, louver, wing, wide hood mldg, wheelip option it as soon as he got it.
Knowing Walt, and you knew him like I did Ken, he wouldn't want the air cleaner to re-unite with the car after just loading it up with shaker,etc...it would likely be for a trade deal he had in the works for something he wanted.
Consider that some 19 year old line worker, after cashing his $92.00 check Thursday nite and hitting the suds with the proceeds...coming in fuzzy headed Friday morning, he may have grabbed a wrong air cleaner. Hope that didn't result in a N94 car leaving the line with a steel hood air cleaner.
Or a trade, accidental or intentional on a new car lot... We know a lot of that went on.
Just ask Steve J about the decklid swap on his orange 71 Hemi Challenger sunroof car, by the dealership owner himself when it sat brand new on his lot. One 71 orange Challenger decklid with a wing was swapped on to another 71 orange Challenger without a wing and both cars sold brand new that way.
Now that you mention it Bruce, I do recall hearing Bob's black Hemi Challenger having that wide lipped hemi lid. Another oddity and ever so cool.

& just to clear up a few things earlier in the thread:

JRepucci's NOS N94 HEMI base and the expertly crafted by "Resto Rick" HEMI wide lip lid & an early pre-production "prototype" (repositioned scoop) T/A hood currently resides on "el HEMI"; an original STANDARD 2-scooped-hood '70 HEMI Challenger R/T.

This kind of thing went on back then. I know a guy who bought a 70 Charger R/T SE brand new,and the car had 14 inch magnum 500 wheels,he said he wanted the 15 inch rallye wheels,so they took the 15 inch rallye wheels off a sixpack Challenger R/T and swapped them with the magnum 500s to make the sale happen. The Challenger was sold with the magnums on it.

He did not want it too badly because he welched on a deal to trade for some run-of-the-mill Hemi exhaust manifolds that I needed for a project! I actually carried the air cleaner all the way from my car to the top of the hill at Carlisle where I met him with his manifolds and he backed out. I ended up selling it to someone else for just enough $ to get some good original exhaust manifolds. The guy that I sold it to was so happy to get it that he was literally shaking when I handed it over to him. He appreciated the rarity of it. For some reason, thanks to his buddy, Downer decided the manifolds were worth more than the air cleaner.

I believe the B5 Blue Six Pack Challenger was run in Pure Stock Drags with a T/A hood & air cleaner.

Years ago I ran a 440 Six Pack in my 1969 Hemi RR... air cleaner matched the Air Grabber hood fine. I believe the basic interfaces were always maintained if possible...

Hey I just thought of it. Paul Petcou runs one of those hoods on his Challenger for P/S. I'll drop him a line...
