Ok guys. I have a factory 360 block with the standard 'NON' pushrod oiling to the rockers. I'm seriuosly thinking of fitting a mild mechanical roller (Comp 248/254 with .576/.582 respectively). Quite often the I have read about the true 'drop in' roller lifters and the machine work required on the block to fit other P/N's. How much block work is there involved to fit the recommended Comp 828-16 lifters OR am I better off spending the extra $200 or so and purchase the true drop in 843-16 (or is it 8043??) considering I'm not using the the pushrod oiling option. Also is there a oil pump drive shaft avaialble with a steel shim under the bronze gear so the gear does not wear agianst the bronze bush in the block?

Thanks

Macka

There should be a number of roller lifters that drop into a production 360 block. The problem is with the R3 blocks, especially the ones with the extra head bolts. Lots of guys on here seem to like the low cost lifters from Herberts although I've never used them myself.

Sometimes the comps will go in with no mods at all, some times you have to really grind clearance into the block. There is no rhyme or reason from what I can see. I've had both 340 and 360 blocks that have had problems, and 340/360 blocks that cleared fine...

I dont know what the diff is between the 828 and 829 Comp lifters.
The 829 lifters have a solid body thats tall enough to clear most aftermarket lifter bore boss's.
There is several lifters on the market which are made by the same company...The tie bars might be a little diff, or they might have a black coating..
Morel makes lifters for company's like:
PBM
Lunati
Bullet Cams
Competition Products
And look from the pick above
Howards and Herberts

These are a very good lifter for the money...Under $300 and would be worth checking into..

The issue on the small block lifters isn't the height, it's the fact that the link bar rivets hit the bore side casting. You can't even get them in the lifter bores in some cases...

That's why the lifters Brian (OU12) came up with work so well. It moves the link bar away from the casting wall, towards the center of the block.

Stock block...... Herberts usually drop right in. They have a flush rivet design & alot of kink to the V in the link bar. Every once in a while the casting @ back of block on lifter valley side on #8 cylinder needs touched just a hair to clear the rivet, but usually the other 7 cylinders drop right in with no work. As far as I can tell from pics, the Howards that Summit sells are the same as a Doug/Chet Herbert.

The Morels are nice, & very similar to Herbert except it has a wider (much wider, look @ pics previously posted) oiling band for absolutely no reason other than to take weight out of them (in a chrysler app)..... unfortunately that can cause more problems than good. Real reason it has wide oil band is not for weight but, problem is they are using a universal .903" GM body & putting Mopar link bars on them, & that's the main reason for the oiling band, to allow oil transfer around the lifters in a GM oiling system..... In a Mopar oiling system the bodies can be solid, but not in a GM.

I just got a set of Morel .904" Mopar EDM flat tappets the other day & same deal, some huge 1/2" wide oiling band in them.... Looks like an old 273 Flat tappet "dumbell" lifter. Damn things are light for a Ft, I will give them that, I forget what we weighed them @ 94 grams? Something like that. Definitely not going to have any problem getting oil to the EDM hole in those babies...

If it's not getting over 500 lbs of spring pressure.... & does'nt require pushrod oiling, those Herberts go in everything I do.... 600+ lbs and or P rod oiler, it gets Crane Ultra Pro's.

Only time the link bar height becomes an issue is with an aftermarket block like a Mopar Mega block (I think that's what is pictured abover) or an R3 based block etc. I just put set of Herberts in a Hemi Mega Block, with a new roller cam.... due to core shift I had about .080" link bar to boss clearance on pass side & about .020" on drivers side. If cam gets reground, lifters or bosses will need modified, otherwise will not go all way down on base circle.

And they are taller than most lifters out there!

Brian, You are awsome, The lifters I got from you fit perfectly, no mods at all, the only thing I think they were missing was gold plating cause they were one of the most expencive parts of my valvetrain. Worth every penny though.

My bullit is gonna scream, and Im glad I listened to this site for my camshaft and valvtrain options.

Kasey

Correct. No oiled bearings either...
