Kara,we ended up registering our daully at class-8 with the max registered gross vehicle combination weight allowable for our truck base on the factory specs at 21,200.We fall under CDL state and federal regulations since our trailer gross is over 10,000 and is a triaxle and is mandatory for state inspection every 6 months. BG
does that include driver weight
That hurt.

Yeah its a real joke. I was trying to hold out, because I saw something in Jan. that they were trying to repeal it, but I gotta use my truck occasionally. Oh well, I saved 2 mos. worth of driving on it.

That won't do a thing if you are towing through PA. If you come here, you have to abide by OUR laws, no matter what is legal where you register it.

A little off subject , I can see your laws haven't changed. Back in 1970 I was driving through Pennsylvania with my 68 road runner, typical car of the day, jacked up , mag wheels with big meats out back and fender well headers hanging down. Stopped for gas , the local pump jockey kid asked where I was from that they would allow a car to be driven on the street looking like that. I didn't get puled over but he kinda had me worried.
it's ok to butt heads, just don't do it with a butthead

So my trailer that is leagaly registered in Maine (as far as the state of Maine is concerned) is not allowed to pass thru PA because???? What is preventing PA rsidents from doing the same?

Do they say "yins" allot? Perhaps they need all of those registration dollars to keep the Amish kids off of crank?
$430/year for a hobby trailer is nuts!!!
That would be "yinz"....
The $430/year is for the truck registration I believe.
Kara, get an RV like your parents. Then you can do anything. My brother has a 40 foot diesel pusher RV with air brakes that with his road runner on an open trailer weighs over 33,000 pounds, and its perfectly legal to drive with a regular license.
That's because I'm in Virginia. Virginia does not have special license requirements for RVs.
Every state is different. Other states require a Class (fill in the blank) non-CDL for driving vehicles of certain weights.
Some Canadian provinces require air brake endorsements.
However, reciprocity laws allow me to drive in those states with my regular license. But, if you live in a state that requires you to have a special license due to weight of the vehicle, you have to get it.
Most states do not require you to get a CDL unless you're driving a commercial vehicle. My motorhome isn't commercially driven, so no CDL.
If you're racing for money, some states will say you're commercial and demand you have a CDL.
Oh, and when I pull the Road Runner, the combined weight is about 37,000 pounds.

Its March 2010, how do they get by with this?
Reality check, that half the population is smarter then 50% of the people and it's a constantly contested fact.

Those are DOT isues and apply in most states. Registration of trailers is not part of that issue. When you register a trailer thru an agency in Maine you give them your Registration rights in the state of Maine. So the trailer is yours but the plate is theirs,(but associeated to your trailer) A cdl and other DOT regs still apply to you, but you do not get killed on the registration costs

Exactly. I cannot register my truck with the combination weight as it is not available on our registration in CT. My trailer is under 10K pounds and I'm keeping it that way. I believe my dually is 10,200 and is registered as a combination plate here. So Pa. will ticket me for no combination registration? If so, that would be rediculous and I could not correct that situation in CT no matter what.

My Trailer is at 15600 and the truck is at 10000, both are registered as such. I have yet to have any issues. As long as we're on the DOT issues. The basic premis of the DOT rules are IF you are using a truck to do your job, YOU must be DOT registered (not your trailer)and follow all the safety standards that apply to your weight class. If you are not using your truck to do your job, you do not need to be DOT registered but still need to follow the DOT safety standards. It is up to you to know the safety standards. An officer can not Deem your racing as a business from the side of the road...period. You must be in violation or display just cause for a ticket to be given. If you do not claim your racing expenses, make your living racing, get paid to go to the races, have DBA for your race team, and/or claim you "winnings" as normal income. you do not need to be DOT registered nor are you a business. You are a hobbyist. Its no different than getting in your Ram 3500 and going to the casino, does that make you a professional gambler???? and in need of a DOT reg NO! even if you are using a truck that you use to do your other type of business. Private is private plain and simple. There is a clause in the DOT reg's that states this information. If officer friendly argues ask him to explain what you are in violation of by number. Remember Officer friendly is just a working putz like you an me. only difference is he gets a flashing light and a funny hat. And like you and me there are people that know their job better than others. Don't cower to being unjustly accused, but be educated and be fair. Do what your state and DOT requires YOU to do and if you can find a legal and safe loophole(Maine trailer registration) use it. Let the what If's, buts...and horror stories commence

I find all the different states having different laws is a major pain... I am legal in my state and looks to be legal in Ohio also and I'm sure for other states but for me to go into PA I'm sure I would get busted from what most of you are saying, here in MI we have a permanent plate for trailers.... looks like some of the other states dont recognize it.... I dont know how I could be legal in PA without buying my registration in that state
