I could use some help picking a cam. I spun a rod bearing and in a motor that was built by the previous owner of my '67 Coronet and the cam is toast. The cam that was in it was a Comp Cams 21-242-4 (http://www.compcams.com/Cam_Specs/CamDetails.aspx?csid=702&sb=2. I have considered replacing it with the same cam, but now that I have to replace it I figured that I should make sure I pick the best one for a street car and I am not so sure that this is it.

Here are the specs of the build:

-451 stroker
-561 heads (worked: ported, larger exh valves)
-Edelbrock Torquer II single plane (I may change this also)
-4:10 gears w/spool
-2500 stall
-Headers

I was thinking of going with a MP cam because I can get MP parts at cost through my sis.

Thanks in advance for your advice and input.

If you liked that one, the MP .509 is not to far off from it, and would allow you to save some $ w/ sis.

You didn't really tell us what you want out of the car. If its a street car, the .509 is a proven solid choice. If you want more power, and do some time at the strip with it, I'd consider going to the .557 solid. Going to a solid, you'd gain more than just a little more in profile. You'd have to invest in some rocker gear, but if you're getting the cam kit at cost, you might be able to do it all for just a little more than you'd spend for the comp hydraulic ???

Let us know a little more about what your goals are.

This car will see little time at the track. I am just looking for an aggressive street build.

I just found out that the MP cam at my sisters cost is actually 5% above cost and it is not the large discount that I expected. I may just go with the same cam as it was part of the complete set: cam, springs, timing, etc. I have also considered the summit k6401 cam.

Also, I am using adjustable roller rockers.

509 will not work well with that 2500 stall, It needs at least 3200 in a heavy car like yours. I just order a cam from Scott Brown, 242/254 @.050 , .548/.540, Solid 112 centerline. I'll be using a 3000 stall and 3.91's. Funny I spun #4 bearing. Just got my new short block Friday. I'll be putting it together as soon as the cam comes in.

I used the summit 488 cam in a 67 cornet. 9:1 440 w/ stock 906 heads RPM intake, headers, mopar 175k converter, 3.91's car ran great 12.90's @ 104

right now the summit set up is looking like a good option. I guess now the question is do I go with the summit or stick with the comp cams. I am guessing that the summit will be a bit more streetable based on the specs.

Thoughts?

The summit cam pulls from 1600 to about 5500. It could put your car well into the 12's and pulls tons of vacuum and idles great.

I ran the old style (76degree overlap) 292/509 with Rhoads lifters for years in a 440 on the street with a stock Road Runner convertor. The low stall convertor kept it from blowing away the tires on the street. Big headers, 4.10 Dana, ported big valve 906's. 60' times were around 1.8 which I thought were respectable in the early 80's for a full weight 71 GTX. I still have a spare cam, if you're interested in it PM me.

'71 GTX w/Air Grabber, Super Trak Pak, Spoiler Pkg. been apart for 22 years, thinking it's time to do something about that....

I run the 60303, but if I had decent compression I'd be running the 60304. But since you've already got the adjustable valve train, I would definitely be going with a solid cam. No reason not to IMO. The summit cam is okay for a budget build, however it doesn't sound aggressive at all, the car my bro bought came with the 6401 summit cam.

I have been thinking about the Lunati Voodoo cams. They are only $70 more that the Summit. Basically I am open to any cam kit, but I want to keep it under $200 shipped.

I highly recommend the LunatiVoodoo cam. I run one in my mudracer and everyone swore it was a roller.

the problem I see is the stall. 2500 isn't that much when you start going up in cam size. If you want to run the big VooDoo I'd think a nice 3000 would work better.

The cam that I was running pushed the car into the mid 12s and it was a decent size. After talking with the tech at Lunati he said that the Voodoo should run fine with the 2500 stall and 4:10 gears because the compression was good. Which coincidentally is going to go up. I found out from the machine shop that I need to go 30 over on the bore. The two cams that the Lunati tech recommended were the 30306 street/strip or the 60304 voodoo.
