You were the one that states it is a rip off, since you know about this machine tell us all about it, about the process and the material used. It is easy to criticize when you do not have a clue what is involved.
Also, I do not own this machine, in fact I have to drive seventy miles each way to get to it. I do not charge for the six to seven hours spent getting this done. I would prefer not doing it, but there is a small demand for it so it is offered for those who want it done.
Apparantly history is already changing. Rereading my post, I didnt say I knew all about this machine, nor the material or the process used. I humbly asked for an explanation. I haul freight for a machine shop who works on textile machinery, and I had my laptop on me this afternoon and showed this post to them. Its simply a matter of making a major profit from a captive audience. Now we hear, that on top of the $75 set up fee and the shops profit on labor plus his, he drives 140 miles, and spends 7 or 8 hours of his time. I doubt any explanation of the setup time and process will ever be provided. I put this under the heading of "Things that make you go hmmmmm". I will chalk it up to a member providing a public service for members at a personal cost to him.
"Amazing how an unchallenged lie can become the absolute truth." I believe this is one Im going to have to challenge. Pencil me in on this challenge. I have taken much interest and learned much from many of his and others posts as there is alot of knowledge in this room. I respect and enjoy the banter and other tidbits of info I have picked up along the way. But Im not biting on this one. Captive audience in the the capitalist marketplace makes for monopoly. That =s extreme price markups. But alas in the end, everyone is entitled to make a buck. I do have a clue. And if its walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and looks like a duck. Then bet on it being a duck. $225 or better for this is probably 150% makeup or better. That 40 yr old machinery doesnt provide a 21st century technologically advanced process after all now. Thank god people dont need the wiring too, or we would have to take out a 2nd mortgage on the home or sell the boat.

Joe I will say it once again . Please bring something to Carlilse or the Nats that "YOU " have done . I would love to see your work . Anybody can read a book or look at picture's . I might step on some toes here but you really need stop kissing Dave's "ECS" butt and chasing his posts looking for excuses to boost your post count . My car will be at Carlilse , please bring yours and park beside me so we can compare more than pictures and drawings . People like you with your "I'm right your wrong attitude " have ruined the hobby for people like me that have been pleasing people for more than 20 years with my resto's . See you in PA .

It is the same as what is on the old house wiring, even the aluminum stuff. beepbeep is right that is not as simple as it may seem, but who knows where some old equipment/stock may be laying around. Think of all the things that Chrysler farmed out...

My original harness - the ends terminate by placing the wire through any anonymous hole in the paper tape that is at the very end . -------------------------------------------------- beepbeep, I wasn't aware that you are called on to restore taillight harness looms. Now that I know, have re-examined my initial statement of your resto service as "a crime in it self." Too quick to judge before knowing all the facts. Guilty. On the contrary, to read as you go a little in depth, I can now respect what it is you're doing for those cars that request this needed service. Not looking for brownie points with you but do want to apologize for my very uneducated statement. You see there are others here feeling the same as I initially did. Even after their knowing what all is entailed. There's no way beepbeep can do it for free - he's performing a professional job for the finest cars in the country. And with the price of these cars & gas today and an all day event for him to wrap one harness like he's said - he's about justified to me at least the time and labor costs for his doing this business. My local plumber and electrician, now there's a rape artist. He's got access to the correct machine, and knows how to use it correctly - just look at his finished work - now pay the man. We should ask his previous customers what they think, if they said 'worth every penny,' and to see the pic he's posted of a harness he's personally restored, its freakin' beauty - and a no brainer who to call on. He's apparently as much an artist in this specialized service as any of the other restorers getting top dollar from us. And flat out said it's cheaper to get a new repro harness - so that's what you can always do if you don't think the cost is justified. Add up all that free info made of gold he usually presents to us, forget about it. Any time he breaks out the changing history, its because some one is trying too and we all know it.

I bought that 'wrap' from a family repair business that has been around since the 30's. I won't say it's a perfect replica of the original but it does look correct. Black cloth tape (friction tape) can be bought at most older established hardware stores.
you have a pic of that wrap?
and yeh thats a good idea to reverse it.... and thanks to all for input

Just an update for all of those who think that this was a ripoff. I sent my harness to Beepbeep to have redone, it came back way better than I could have ever expected. It looks like a new harness and the price was in line with what a new harness would have cost. I want to thank Joe for the help in getting this done and I hope you are feeling better.

There appears to have been at least two different paper taillight harness wraps used in 1970, maybe more? but at the least, two were used that differed slightly in appearance. One type of wrap was used on a Gran Coupe (SPD 10-69) 'basic' rear harness (i.e. no courtesy lights for rear panels & non-convertible) original & out of my deceased aunt's '70. The other paper wrap, with a different manufactured 'weave,' is found on the taillight harness to my '70 convertible (SPD 6-70)'deluxe' harness that has the courtesy light option. I have also seen it used on a friend's '70 Challenger SE. Now wondering if both types of paper wrap are still available. I stated earlier that this conv '71 Barracuda rear harness I also have here was wrapped in a cloth tape & not in paper like found on these 3 '70 E bodys. I may post pics later this week of the two different types of paper wraps. Any one ever owned/seen an original '71 E Body with anything other than cloth tape used on the rear harness?
