This is going in a 1967 GTX. I am looking for the little detail items that I might have missed or didn't know were used on these engines. I know I am missing the following in these pictures. Fan,spacer, water pump pulley,Distributor advance vacuum hose and S clip, and hot air tube to choke. If I am missing something or something don't look correct, please reply!!!

Thanks
Dan.

Crap! If you're dissatisfied I'll take it off your hands Looks awesome to me, though I'm not a hemi expert by any stretch. Nice work.

I see something that would be wrong on a 440 but I don't know about a Hemi.... The alternator bracket on a 440 doesn't have the hole for access to the temp sender till 68... And that would mean the waterpump housing has a bolt hole positioned slightly different... But as I said Hemi may be different...

FWIW it is beautiful... But waiting for Scott to look...

I got the paint from Supercar Restorations

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The color looks spot on for 1964-1968 Race Hemi's, Street Hemi's, and Max Wedges, it's typically called "Race Hemi Orange". That's the first I've seen of thier paint, looks just as close as what Frank Badelson sells.

As far as nit picking your detailing job, pretty tough to do without being there, you definately have it very close, any small stuff would likely relate to paint application (bare areas, overspray, etc.) hose and belt markings, etc. Of course wrong oil filter, other noted missing componants you mentioned, and I think your alternator needs some help.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Scott, I started another thread to nit pick my problem areas. I need all the help I can get . I didn't have my alternator sent out and done, could you give me some pointers that I could do to make it more correct?

Thanks
Dan.

I pulled this from the other thread as a lead in to save some typing.

Ok, on the alternator, the Stator (the bare steel looking part sandwiched between the front and rear case halves) should have a brownish gold color as they were coated with an insulating varnish when new, the rear case deatils aren't eveident in your pics but you should have date stamped/part#'d diodes as well as a ribbed style Torington center bearing plus other small screw plating details, also, most of them had colored splashes of inspection markings around the positive post area and the back side of the case. Jim Ridge fromDixie Restorations can likely help you on all that.

*BTW, R/T, his alternator bracket is fine

There is gas in them .
Was there any type of tab or bracket used to hold the choke tube in to the choke housing? Where could I get information on paint markings to do the engine, and for that matter the rest of the car and drive train.

Thanks
Dan

How bout the fuel filters, were they suppose to be silverish looking ones.I thought the white ones came on race hemis.Looks great though .By the way though the paint on the exhaust manifolds, will burn right off the fist time you start the car, it did on mine

should the temp sender have that much paint on it ?

and you better put some clamps on them there hoses to help prevent any leaks.

ps - hose and clip is enroute

Looks great Dan. The only things I see beside what has been stated already, and this is getting nickle/dime, there usually is a small amount of overspray on the valve covers right at the base. The engines were painted with the valve covers on and the taping off was hit and miss. The plug wires may also have paint marks slopped on them. Carb ID tags? When is it going in? Drop me a line to let me know how things are going. Holgar

No, his filters are the correct style, all 1964-1967 Hemi's utilized plastic filters, the info I have shows blue ink stamped filters were street Hemi's, red ink stamped filters were Race Hemi & Max Wedge. The current plastic reproduction filters are not exact to originals, but they are allot closer than steel would be.

Concerning the exhaust manifold paint, yes, most would burn away pretty quickly, however most times there are areas around the exhaust flanges that don't so you will see remnants there in most cases.

I agree on the valve covers being installed when painted (masked off) and usually had the gaskets and a fine edge of paint near the very edges of the covers in areas (it was usually not very uniform). Also, often times the plug wires having traces of paint as well (that would have been covered in my generalized paint details comment).

The spark plug wires and distributor were installed as a unit pre-assembled, the paint was still wet when the wires were dragged around on the engine to route them and often picked up small smears of paint. Also, many plug wires have tiny speckles of paint indicating that they were in the line of fire when the engine was being painted, so it's likely that the wires were'nt far away when the engine was painted, possibly the distributor assembly was installed and masked off somehow. The fuel lines & filters were also installed when the engine was wet, often the lines & filters will have paint smears on them as well.

There was a small metal strip that some choke assemblies had to retain the choke tube (I have them reproduced if you want one) but there are so few untouched survivor cars out there that had one I have never actually seen one that was original on a 66-70 Hemi car, I have however found them on other early 60's Mopar engines so they did exist. Here's what they look like.

Also, I can now get proper reproduction 66/67 carb tags (they have embossed verticle lines stamped into them). They are spendy though.

Those spark plug wire holders on the valve covers are obviously repro's because they are too white. The oil dip stick spear covering is too white also. Originally it was a pretty creamish looking white. You are missing the embossed "M" on your oil filter. I can't quite tell in your picture, but it is a common mistake I see is that the nut on the PVC is supposed to be a solid one. A lot of people use a stamped one by mistake. I have never seen that strap on the choke, so I wouldn't ever put one on. They did have a piece of tape over the choke cap originally so that I would do. It is quite common to find traces of orange paint on the valve cover edges and the plug wires as others have stated. Otherwise, it looks superb!

I agree on the white plug wire holders and dip stick covering, and I already commented on the choke strap (never seen one on a Hemi) so I'd tend to agree in not adding one unless further proof they were actually used is dug up.

Here's an example of the tape mentioned, it wasn't used to hold the choke tube, it was most likely used to retain the choke cover in place before it was adjusted and tightened down. You can usually see traces of the yellowish brown burnt tape glue on most original choke covers. BTW, there was more kinds of tape, one type was a typical masking tape, and one was a yellowish orange plastic tape that looked like electrical tape.

Oh, and since we are really scratching for details here. I am guessing that your choke cover is a reproduction as oppsed to an original? I say that because reproductions are generally too shiney (looks ultra high gloss in your pics), originals have a duller appearance.

Another item would be the negative battery cable. I've seen 3 survivors that showed the exact same detailing on the cable paint, all 3 were painted all the way to the end where the cable meets the end and there was evidence of where the head was taped off to keep it clean. I'll see if I can find a pic.

Hi Scott....question for you.

"all 1964-1967 Hemi's utilized plastic filters, the info I have shows blue ink stamped filters were street Hemi's, red ink stamped filters were Race Hemi & Max Wedge."

I'm doing a 1968 Hemi Dart clone.....done a lot of research on these things and I don't know off the top of my head ever seeing a Red Inked filter. Have any pictures??

Sorry for the high jack. The engine looks real nice and very correct, Good Job!!

....there is nothing like driving my 1968 Hemi Dart around town and having people looking at you like you're nuts!!

Is that Teflon Tape on the fuel fitting?? If it is you might want to remove it. Teflon tape and fuel don't work very well together.

Is that a red wire coming out of the Distributor?? Hard to see. Should be black with a red eyelet.

Nuts and carb studs... shouldn't they be black phosphate?

I'm not real good on 66-67 Hemis so I could very easily be wrong.

Very nice job!!
