that cam will run about 6-8" vacuum at idle. and the so the 3.5 is about right. thats what i used to run when i ran it in my 340.

It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it's got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas.

what distributor and ignition system are you running? i hadan old dual point distributor that would ping all the the time. went with an electronic and ecu and that cured a lot oof my trouble.

Also, could be the jetting is lean. I have always noticed the vacuum drops immediately to pretty much 0 when you step on it so the PV most likely is doing whats its supposed to.

If the timing is good, and no vac adv like you said, then the jetting is next

In a big block I set the idle up to 900 or 1000 and run a 5.5 or even a 6.5 you only need 1.5 numbers under your in gear idle vacuum.
If it's pulling good vacuum on the highway and yo give it 1/3 throttle and it stays above 3.5 you enrichment circit does not work and it will be lean. likely the same problem off the line.

I'm running a MP electronic distributor that has been recurved by FBO. Using the FBO coil and box as well.

Jets are 73/84 which I thought was quite a bit above stock.

The car doesn't sound right at 1000 rpm idle. I like the low rumble of the 750-ish idle.

I thought the PV has to be about half of what the gear idle was, I can go as high as 1.5 below gear idle?

sounds kinda like my old 440, had 452 heads cut .080 with fel pro composite head gaskets. i ran 37 degrees of timing with a modded 800 holley dp. Usually ran 50/50 110leaded to sunoco 94. went 12.50's that way

If it'll idle @ 750 that's great. Half in gear is Holleys std for a good baseline to start with.

IMO, there's no way it should ping with that combo. Have you ever checked the timing curve that FBO gave you? Funny thing about pinging... Once it starts, it self propogates.. So you can't stop it unless you back off the throttle. So the trick is to not let it start. What gearing and convertor do you have in the car?

Well, art is art, isn't it? Still, on the other hand, water is water! And east is east and west is west and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does. Now, uh... Now you tell me what you know.

Yea you can go 1.5 numbers below your IN GEAR idle vacuum. 1/2 is for real mild cams 16 to 20 in gear vacuum!
Try a 5.5 or 6.5 you will like it!

I have checked what they gave me and it was right on.

3.55 suregrip and a stock 340 convertor (not sure what is stalls/flashes at).

Yeah, from memory I have about 7-8 inches of vacuum.

Cam sounds retarded and the low power valve number is probably opening to late causing a lean ping!

had same issue, stepped up power valve and problem gone. I also have very low vac. at idle around 5.0-5.5
