I am working on picking up Andys(340_Dart ) engine program.
I thought for the parts the car did not run the number like it should so I just wanted to give everything the once over. I found lots of little things wrong and I hope fixing them will get his car running much better.
The big thing is the cam was off for what the engine CR was.(CR was thought to be 10.9to1) and it was only 10.25to1 not allot but cam was ground for more squeeze. This was due to the chamber size CR was set with the thought the chamber was 68cc I checked one and it was 73.5cc.
I found the springs were set .250" from coil bind Andy was only turning this 6850rpm and the valve locks are beat up bad with only 50 1/4mi runs. The springs should be set max .070" from coil bind this should help settle valve-train down.
The next thing I would like to fix is it only has 5/16 push-rods like to get min. of a 3/8 push-rod in this deal.
I am converting the intake from 4150 to 4500 top I think this will help a bunch and the heads will get update valve job the min throat diameter was at about 85.5% I am going to set this to 90% and open up the sort turn.
Well here are some pics for you Andy.

This is new valve job and no short turn work. You can see in this picture the engine had lots of reversion for only 50 1/4 runs in a drag car no street use.

Andy's combo is almost the same as mine. I have an early set of the 360-2 230s & the chambers checked out to 65 cc. At zero deck,.039 cometics and JE flat tops my compression worked out to 11.4. My cam is much milder 260/266 @.50 with a .420 lobe and 1.6 T&d rockers. I thought Andy's combo would work a lot better with a cam similar to your contest engine due to his low comp. Nice work on the intake & valve job. My heads were rough in the valve seat area also & Bob George cleaned them up for me. My combo went 9.87 136 first time out on pump with no tuning. We were working on the suspension. Keep at it Andy, I'm sure Brett will get that cool little valiant flying. Randy

thanks for the pics brett. That intake looks totally different!
Brett and i talked this fall about my combination and the possible things holding it back. At first, i was ready to do the necessary changes to make this motor 12.5 or 13:1 and hopefully make the power i need to run 10.00's, but after talking with brett we decided to go through my current engine being i'm on a budget, and make the changes necessary to make more power and keep it on pump gas! We both think the changes will easily get the car into the high 9's

Randy, we ended up having my cam reground for less duration (like the contest motor). I'm not sure of the specs on it, as it's at brett's place right now. He can post them if he wants too...

On a side note, If any of you average weekend bracket racers like me ever get the chance to watch an engine builder like brett tear down an engine, do it!
I learned alot of things to look for and a lot of tricks to tearing down an engine the saturday i spent with brett going through my stuff. All along, i had been doing it the hard way!

The combo is there, it just needs to be tweaked. I don't think 360-2 230 cc motors need big comp to run the number. Andy, you were already getting close with that 10.38. I think there is still a lot of et left in mine. It sure is a lot more fun at the track without spending $10 to $12 per gallon for gas. Good luck. Randy
