I was sitting in the stands, and could hear the nitrous start flowing full blast, then I saw him reach to try and restart it! I yelled and stood up just as it exploded. My brain took two distinct pictures which will never be erased, the radiator jumping forward, and the fact that the carb and intake were absolutely destroyed.

Well that worked so here we go again...
First Hi Moparts! My name is Chris Barber and I bought the Demon from Mike Robbins. The title said he has owned it since last summer and I think he bought it from Lee Saunders in FL.
The car still looks just like the pic with the lovely lady. I looked the car over pretty well on a lift and saw no evidence of any fire damage. The paint looks pretty fresh so who knows. Rear quarters could use patch panels (for the bondo) which if AMD has them I will try to get done, otherwise the body is in great shape.
Edit: I cannot view photobucket pics here at work. Can anybody post up that fire pic on another photo site and reply here?
The engine is a 499 Keith Black / B1 that with 2 stages of spray that supposedly made 1250 HP on the Nelson Performance (FL) dyno. The engine was supposedly freshened up with a new Bryant crank, new alum rods, new pistons by Adger Smith in Texarkana. I do not have the engine build sheets or dyno data, yet... but will try to get those.
I live in North Alabama and the home track will be Huntsville Dragway (1/8 mi) which is 5 back road miles from my shop. I will get tags and maybe drive it on the street some too.
I have a brand new 540 world / Indy 440-1 engine I may put in so this old guy doesn't have to do so much maintenance. Headers will be the issue.
Anybody that has any info on what the car has been doing since the KOS days in 2001 please let me know.
This is one nice toy from back in the day. The car I should have had in HS (well, really a 4 sp 340 Demon).
are you going to bring that to josh's KOS/10.5 race's in indy and Norwalk?

Man I wish someone would post up the pics of the explosion or a link. I can't see some photobucket sites, some they show. Who was driving the car at the time? No evidence of any such destruction that I can tell and no mention from Mike about the little incident. I'll have to look harder but I gave the car a pretty good looking over before I laid down the bengis. I can say that at this time the carb abd intake are very much alive and well. The engine runs great! The engine compartment is very very clean so maybe someone re-did it. Well, maybe one hacked in hole near the pass side fwd upper A arm pivot that is still there and Mike didn't claim to know a thing about it. When did this incident happen? Besides, I wonder how the NOS was flowing unless the microswitch on the carb (activates at full throttle) was stuck on. As for going all the way up to Indy I doubt it, at least this year. This is about 2.5X the car I have driven (416 street 68 fish - 7.20/98.x) before and I plan to crawl, walk before I run on both nawz systems. Kinda intimidated about the juice. I might even put my nice mild 14-1 540 in after a few passes with the 499. Is that the same Josh that works the phone at Indy? If so... Do they allow 12 ga shotguns in the gate?

Airwoofer, You have to remember this occurred like 15 years ago. The nitrous system was on a timer activated by the trans-brake button. He staged and had already pushed the button, but the bottom bulb was flickering. So he released the trans-brake to get another bite at the bottom bulb, as he moved forward the car died, then as he reached to re-start it, the timer went off and started spraying nitrous, or he must've went full throttle to fire it, not sure. If someone has a hi-res copy of the pic, perhaps they can e-mail it to you.

It's good to see that the Demon will be put to good use again! I grew up seeing Mike run his heads up cars at Brainerd Optimist dragstrip. I don't have an exact date on the explosion but Mike was piloting the car at the time. I think it was 2001? However I do remember seeing the car at Brainerd right after he got the car sorted out from the explosion. If I remember correctly there was minimal damage - mostly cooked wiring. The hood may still be orbiting the earth tho.. There is a Mopar Action write up on the car. I will see if I can find it and scan it in. I hope to see the car again at the Huntsville show this summer!

That hood went straight up probly 50 or 75 feet! It was like a square column fire straight up out of the engine bay! Never forget seeing that. Sorry I don't recall the year though.

Always loved that car, even though I never got to see it in person. I have a picture of it on my garage wall...wheels up high at the starting line! It's got the black cowl hood with the black side stripes in the magazine pic. Good luck, and have loads of fun with it Airwoofer

Airwoofer, I hope you can bring that car down my way and run it. I have always liked that car, I am about the only mopar at the track . I run at I-22 and Lassiter Mountain. They run some heads up races at the Mountain.

Mopars are few and far between at HSV especially since Wild Bill passed.
Well, The fools sold me tags and insurance and I got the car out on the street ETs Sunday for a little test driving. This thing is an absolute beast on the street and I never got over 1/2 throttle when punching it, didn't even get into the cam (keeping it under 4500 or so) and 50 MPH. The smallish radiator (reverse flow) is OK at 45 cruising but when you have to slow the fan/radiator can't keep up and it gets up around 200 degrees. 1st gear is about useless except to get you to 2nd and that gear is useless at 1/4 throtle or more. This was with 6 PSI in the tires. I can't wait until the track opens in March for some TnT. Hopefully I can get up to a full motor pass on the trans brake. In the meanwhile I will be cleaning up a little laundry list of stuff to fix.
I am probably going to sell the engine and the things it takes to put it into an A-body. Anybody interested in a turn key, fresh 499 Keith Black water / B1 engine that supposedly made 1250 on the dyno with the spray send me a PM. I will be including the very large headers/exhaust, B1 intake with the fogger system (and a bunch of plumbing), reverse flow radiator, vaccuum system, and probably all the stuff for the data system forward of the firewall (maybe including the Racepak SC1000 box too). Gonna be looking for $15K for all. Will put a classified here and the other Mopar sites as well as RJ.
I have a new 540 I built that will go in it's place. Too bad I built that engine with so much compression but that jerk Josh at Indy sold me the wrong pistons and I will have to deal with 14-1 and C-16 until I can fix that. Gonna put in a new radiator and headers

I-22 is having there first T&T March 1 at 2:00. I will be there, can't wait. Hope it is warm weather.
