I started life with one of the 700 dollar ish PTC convertors. It broke after several years of use. I took it to Jim at JPT, a highly reputable tranny and converor maker who does trannies and convertors for many " class" cars in the country and has for 30 years. He pointed out to me where and why the PTC broke...long story short, cheap parts..that said, the convertor was " only" 700 bucks, PTC does make more expensive ones.I know mine broke behind a smallblock that was 90% foorbraked at that time, at least. He suggested ATI, his own, and turbo action as three builders/makers who offer high quality convertors. I bought a used ATI he had laying around, and adjusted, and it works perfectly, and has for a few years. The piece that broke on my PTC was some sort of " tube" as i recall him saying, that was about 90 thou wall thickness. He said any " good" convertor, that wall is about 170 thou thick, and that is why it cracked on my PTC. I trust his judgement, and wont buy another PTC, but that isnt to say somebody else might not have luck. He also doesnt like how they weld up the ring gear on their mopar convertors either. As hard headed as i can sometimeS be, when an expert tells me to stay away, i usually listen your results might vary

I had a Turbo Action swapped it for a PTC - car picked up .4 in the 1/4. Woohoo!!!! Then I started having several issues. Swapped out for an ATI - all good.
I have a question for the guys that swapped to another converter(I dont care what company) that picked up big amounts.... Was the stall the same as before

thats the problem with all this, I picked up a bunch over this or that converter. some of which were never speced for their combo or just plain have the wrong converter. I say if you gain more than a tenth oe two something bad was wrong..

I called and talked to Paul at T/A today. I was impressed to say the least just from the lineage he was able to detail from my converter. Its a 1982 originally sold to Chrysler Corp... It needs a little updating.

Lenny from Ultimate Converter Concepts is a class act. I went to him on a Saturday morning and told him the problem with my old converter, he opened it up and showed me the problem and came back 3 hours later and my new converter was ready and it worked great. will go back to him this spring for my new converter

Mike - the T/A was in the car when I bought it, but I had the receipt and order that showed it was custom built for the car/combo. No other changes - going to the PTC it picked up .4. I did however change the stall because I knew I was going to be adding a tunnel ram soon.
The combo of the torque converter and the tunnel ram changed the car from 9.99 to 9.35.
Now - I had my issues with PTC - performance wasn't one of them - longevity was. Now I have an ATI and everything is fine. Not bad mouthing anyone or company in this. As mentioned - everyone has good and/or bad with every converter company around.

Bill did you run the new conv before you changed to the tunnelram, if so was the stall the same OR did you go right to the tunnelram... I know with the tunnelram you picked up torque so thats not a apples to apples comparison...I'm just trying to figure out if guys that had a big difference if it was with the same stall speed... thanks for the info

I guess we all get different experiences from people/ vendors.
I bought stuff from Rick two years ago.
Best customer service, and products I have purchased from a USA supplier, BAR NONE.
As for a converter, I run a dynamic, that I have had problems with. They made good on it, but not without quite a bit of debating first.
Left a bad taste in my mouth . I'm planning on sending it to Ultimate to have some work done to it.

Ran the car with the new converter but without the tunnel ram - went from consistent 9.9Xs to consistent 9.5Xs.
Added the tunnel ram and it runs consistent 9.3Xs.
As I mentioned - I did change the stall.
