With all the articles lately on the declining zinc content in "off the shelf" motor oil, I had been thinking about what might be the best oil to use in a '69, stock, 440.

Which brand? Synthetic or conventional?

What about the new Joe Gibbs "Hot Rod" motor oil, comes in both a synthetic and conventional, with heavy zinc and other additives for flat tappet motors?

Thoughts?

I use Brad Penn or Valvoline Racing oil. Of the two, Brad Penn has higher Zinc/Phosphates from my understanding.

Any w enough zinc (or zinc additive) & a Wix filter changed 4X a year. A fresh high dollar build I'd use synthetic (after breakin) w a better filter also changed 4X yearly.

Your normal oil brand + 1 bottle of STP oil treatment ought to be enough zinc to keep the cam alive.

I use Amsoil in everything. They have a good variety of synthetic high zinc oils.

Food for thought:

Four-Ball Wear Test (ASTM D-4172):

* 132lbs surface tension pressure
* 302 degrees Fahrenheit operating temperature
* 1800 RPMs
* 1 hour operating time
* Wear scar expressed in millimeters

Quote:

"The ASTM D-4172 4-Ball Wear Test is a good measure of an oil’s ability to minimize wear in case of metal-to-metal contact. The test consists of a steel ball that sits atop three identical balls that have been placed in a triangular pattern and restrained from moving. All four balls are immersed in the test oil, which is heated and maintained at a constant temperature. The upper ball is then rotated and forced onto the lower three balls with a load measured in kilogram-force (kgf). After a one-hour period of constant load, speed and temperature, the lower three balls are inspected at the point of contact. Any wear will appear as a single scar on each of the lower balls. The diameter of the scar is measured on each of the lower balls and the results are reported as the average of the three scars, expressed in millimeters. The lower the average scar diameter, the better the anti-wear properties of the oil." - Cited Here - link
