Good point. It's starting to get complicated. One would need to know the actual contact area of each combo. I wish I could remember where I heard that info.

My mechanical genius racer buddies agree with Myron: fewer/bigger teeth = more impact strength, all else being equal.

Somewhere I have heard that one factor in the strength of the ring gear lies in the number of teeth on it. The less teeth, the bigger they are, thus stronger. I don't know if there are other 8 3/4" examples of basically the same ratio having different amounts of ring and pinion teeth.

OK more teeth may mean smaller teeth, but also more helical teeth in contact at one time. The difference I think you may be alluding to is, the Ring gear never changes diameter, but it does change thickness quite a bit, the pinion gear changes diameter quite a bit, and I think as ratios change the strength characteristics and the reasons for the strenght change, is my guess.

Reality check, that half the population is smarter then 50% of the people and it's a constantly contested fact.

Thumperdart,
Do some "drumming" on Quicktree's head!

There's no arguement that a Dana 60 is the strongest rear for racing. But there are too many 8 3/4's doing a good job for too many people. You just have to know it's limits.

Happy New Year!

I Agree 100% Every time I used one with a decent motor my car came home on a tow truck.

Also I also agree that an 8 3/4 is stronger than a stock ford 9". Spend alot of cash and the 9" is the best. Spend alot less cash on a dana 60 and it will only be slightly weaker than a high $$$ 9".

The fords that I've seen all seem to go like a hand grenade like that one. When an over-burdened 8 3/4 finally gives out, its kind of anti-climatic, ending up with a cracked cap when the center is pushed hard to the side by the pinion.
I wonder how many failures are due to homemade mechanics that think they are qualified to set up differentials?

Let him have it Quicktree- pinion angle versus operating angle..!!!!

Tell him how to set the pinion angle on a 4x4, two piece driveshaft vehicle etc....

Let him have it!!!!!!!!!!!!
