I was always impressed with Zippy's low-budget build he had for awhile. That thing hauled for what it was.

Thanks, appreciate that

I just followed the Direct Connection 13.5 second combo as close as I could afford at the time, which meant I bought the recommended cam, but I skipped the good valve job and the cylinders were nowhere near straight or round

Flogging it for 13 years and knowing it really well helped alot too.

I don't know my current combo anywhere near that well, darned real life keeps getting in the way of testing...

how are you guys getting these big rollers in there with stock pistons? OP said completely stock bottom end like pulled right out of aold mope!

Stock pistons .150 in the hole helps alot with clearance

Sure they don't have any compression but the big cam fits fine

Just last year my 67 Satellite still had the original 383 130,000 mile short block in it, and its orig. 516 heads with stock valves. It was a 2bbl motor, so in the 9:1 neighborhood. Wearing a holley 750 and an RPM intake, with a Delta .496 hyd. cam and a set of used headers, it went 13.73 @ 101. I flogged that 383 to 6400 RPM, and it never missed a beat. held 40 psi of oil pressure until the day it came out.

Before, just a completely factory built OE shortblock.

I'd gone as quickly as 12.2s at 112 MPH in a 3700# car... until it threw a rod. Ya' can't trust those OEM rod bolts once they've had all those miles run up on them.

Also see the "stock smogger 440" thread in the best of/archives section.
Mine ran a 12.0 at 110 in a 64 dodge .. .528 cam.

My NOS rollers have 114 lobe sep. That helps a ton.The Max wedge heads are cut a mile.So it has some compression.
