After a couple years of "I'm going to paint it some day", I finally decided now is the time. Car in question...my daughter's '67 Barracuda. Rick (71autoxr) and I decided there's no better time than now to knock this thing out, so for the last couple of weekends we've started. First order of business was fixing the nose clip. Besides the grille holes being jacked up, the rest of the nose is perfect. We cut out the bad holes and welded in patches. Cleaned them up and shaped them to look "factory". We've yet to drill the holes, but so far, so good.

Next order of business is the roof. A previous owner had hacked in a sun roof and then another owner after him decided to take it out and hack in a patch. We spent a couple of hours tonight digging through about 1/2" of filler to find the welds so we can fill them right. The previous filler job was over some surface rust and it had begun to crack and peel. Our solution is to dig it all out and shoot it with epoxy primer to seal it, then fill over the top of that....and not with a 1/2" thick layer! Slowly but surely...hope to have color on it before the new year.

It is now...

It's going to be a gunmetal-like silver with black accents. By accents I mean the "PLYMOUTH" across the nose will be black, the fender emblems will be black, the grilles will be black/chrome (instead of argent), and I might put black side stripes on it. I also have the "E-body" hood in my sig that we're going to refinish in the process. The scoop inserts will be black. It should be pretty sweet when finished.

You are making some nice progress. Is your daughter think since you are working on her car now? Is she excited?

Yeah, "Fun With Sharpies". BTW...not my dining set...that's Rick's. I have the white set.

Yeah, she knows...we're not pulling a "Over Hauling" on her. She's pretty excited to know she's not going to have to drive around in a primered piece of crap any more...now it will be a painted piece of crap. Deep down she loves the attention she gets in it even now.

In the late 70's I worked at an auto glass shop.. We used to just die when people would bring in there "pop top" sunroofs that were leaking.. Cut a hole in your roof expect the worse.. Another local glass shop was cutting out the tops of NEW trans ams and others installing t-tops... Still remember walking into that shop and an installer ( if you want to call him that) had his skill saw cutting off the roof of a brand new ( dealer still owned it) Trans am... Scary..

Today's progress. Finished stripping the roof and epoxy primered it to seal it. We'll do the body work on top of the epoxy primer.

Then we had a little hillbilly fun...

I think I'm going to tell my daughter we're just going to clear coat it like this.

Since the roof is already hacked up...why not go all the way and make it into a convertable?

Funny thing is, I have a spare roof I bought off Jim (65belvjim) a while ago...it's sitting in the back yard. I just don't want to mess with it right now...we just want to get some driver quality paint on it for now.

BTW...I do know someone making a convertible out of a 4-door Dart.

Maybe some T-tops then ?

Surely you could find a mid 70's Camaro or Firebird in the junkyards willing to donate it's roof to you.

(BTW...Silver should look awesome! )

A little more progress last night. Rick banged out a few dents in the PS fender and we stripped and primered the nose and fender.

Looking good! Are you going to shoot the engine bay silver as well? Silver looks great on those cars.

Yes, the bay will get silver as will the trunk and door jams, eventually. Initially we are just shooting the exterior and jams. The engine bay will be done when I transplant a V8 into it.

Today's progress...the pass side is in primer/surfacer. Had to re-blast the roof welds and shoot them in epoxy again, too.

That car reminds me of a girl I dated. Like her hair color I don't think anyone remembers the original color of that Barracuda.

BTW as I shiver while I type this I can say I only wish was back in Arizona. We're expecting ice and snow tomorrow.

Looks good!

We've seen so many damn colors on that car, we haven't figured out what was original, either.

Thanks all!

It needs a vinyl roof over the butchery.

Today's progress...stripped the trunk lid, roll pan, driver's 1/4, and driver's door. Also primed all the newly stripped panels. Driver's fender and hood are all we have left to strip!! WOOHOO!!

Only rust we've found...we'll fix it another day.

We even got our buddy Hector in on the fun!

It was too dark by the time we finished spraying to take a shot of the completed primer...tomorrow.

Today's progress...stripped the hood, driver's fender, & cowl. Also, started filling the roof welds.

Hood welds...

Smoooooth...

Body work 101...a previous body shop mated two fenders together to make one. Yes, the fender was cut in half and mated with another half. Oh, and the front half is a '69 with the marker light filled in with a patch. Go figure.

We also found that the cowl vents had been "replaced" at one time with a welded in patch. The more we strip, the more fun we find. Thankfully, this was the last of the stripping. Shouldn't be any more surprises. Now, hit the shower!

So true...

More fun today...sand blasted some surface rust off the driver's fender, sand blasted the hood welds, filled in some dents and skimmed the hood welds with filler. Also, filled a hole in the driver's fender with lead.

Done for the night...sleeping next to Rick's Challenger.

Today's progress...she's finally ALL in primer! Finished up some smoothing of seams on the hood, filled (with lead) the biggest and only second rust hole we found, smoothed out the driver's fender, and shot it all in primer/surfacer. Now the fun begins...blocking. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Oh yeah...and we put racing stripes on it! LOL

Looks good but I think you got the stripes crooked. Also, Is that a Shelby is spy?

It's distortion by the camera. In person they're straight. They're just a gimmick anyways and will be sanded off before final paint. Beer and nothing better to do usually finds time to do something silly like that.

Yes, that's a Shelby you spy. It's Rick's (71autoxr) brother's GT350.

Why do you need to use so much boddy filler. The photos from December 12 look like the body was warped all over. Was this car hail damaged? Was it in a fire? Talk about a bondo wagon. Would'nt it be better to just paint the bare metal?

I'll jump in here, the body, for the most part, is pretty straight. The roof has a large patch from the sunroof removal/repair, the hood was grafted from a later e-body hood, the fender is a combination of two fenders. Both doors, and both quarters have very minimal filler. The passengers side fender has very little filler. A lot of the pictures show bare metal with some prior tan-ish primer that is in good shape with no need for us to strip off, and should not be confused with filler.
I think the car was a pretty typical transportation vehicle for a great number of years and just wracked up some minor dents and dings, but as far as we can tell nothing major. Both quarter panels are original as well as both doors.
The goal is just to have a decent driver for Mike's daughter, which will be a daily driver, and not to spend too much money or time. So far I think were into it for 8-10 days labor and Mike will have less than $1000 into it for body work beer and paint.
Seeing the car in this stage has given Mike new life for the project and may have already ordered all the parts to rebuilt the front end and do the v-8 swap after paint.

Wurd...

As Rick mentioned, I think you are confusing filler with the color of paint we left on the car. There were 7-8 layers of primer and paint. The only areas we took all the way to metal were the hood and roof. Other areas we got down to smooth paint and left it. The only filler we have used was on the roof, hood, and Frankenstein driver's fender...and it was only used to cover welds. The lower rear quarters also have patches welded in, so there's a little filler there too. There's less than 1/16" in the deepest areas. The rest of the car is straight and rust free. The only rust we did find, Rick filled with lead instead of plastic...did a damn fine job too, I must say. In the days we have spent, there were some surprises we uncovered when we began stripping. Those surprises have been addressed and we're no worse for the wear.

Thanks all for the encouraging comments. Hopefully by March we'll have it in paint. I know my daughter is getting excited seeing it all in primer now. I have more plans for it than my wallet can handle, so little by little it will be taken care of. No front end parts yet...

Yep, I know. We have to wish for some warmer weather...I don't think we want to paint when it's 50* out.

You know I'm there for the rest of the projects we have lined up...

All those layers of paint would certainly give it that look of a leopard as you are trying to get the body ready for paint. It looks like your hard work is paying off.

Your car is in great shape compared to my project. The rust has really taken its toll on mine. I wish I had a vehicle as solid as yours.

Sorry to hear you have a major rust project on your hands. I used to live in upstate NY, so I've seen my fair share. That's one of the biggest reasons I moved down here...rust-free sheet metal.

I have the matching set for the ones that are on the rear. They're American Racing Champ 500's. I need to rebuild the front end before I put them on...as it is I am blowing through $20 used tires on the front. If I had saved the $40 each time, I'd have enough to buy the front end parts...

Most of the car has been wet sanded with 400 grit. Some more glazing is needed here and there to smooth out some imperfections, but it's getting there!

Glamor shot...

Hey Mike, nice work on the frankencuda!! Looking real good. I have to jump in and tell the fender story though. I was out on a date(pre-marriage ) and the gal and I had a couple of beers and decided to cab it home. It was parked in a pretty nice neighborhood in los feliz and of course when I went to get it in the morning.....HIT AND RUN on the fender. The car was my driver at the time and I had to remove the fender in the street as it was pushed into the tire to make it roll. So the front of the fender was trashed, bought a 69 fender at the fling that was rusted in the back......so there you go. Necessity is the mother of invention as they say....

Well, up until this past weekend not much had been done in the two weeks prior (Christmas and New Years weekends...no time for the car). This weekend we got hot and heavy with it and glazed some imperfections and shot the whole car in 2-3 coats of more primer. Of course, no weekend goes without a hitch and when I started spraying the hood this morning, the primer reacted with the semi-sanded off black stripes and caused me to have to stop. Rick and I had to sand the stripes completely off to ensure a smooth finish of primer. All in all, the car looks 99% better than it did 6-7 weeks ago when we started. The roof and hood are phenomenal compared to what we started with. Oh yeah...the Frankenstein fender too! LOL! Here's some boring shots of this weeks progress. Next week is a complete wet sand and the following week is paint!

Some of the glazed areas --

These are the stripes we had to "remove"...this was before we totally removed them. Also, more glazed areas --

Somehow we forgot to strip the driver side rocker...two steps forward, one step back. DOH!

Sandblasted the center of the trunk lid where the wide molding goes --

Progress while sanding off the glaze --

Shooting primer...from the doors back (we still had some work to do on the hood) --

Working the glaze on the fenders and hood --

Fenders shot in primer --

Sun gettin' low...done for the night.

Showed back up at Rick's this morning bright and early. Finished the hood and roof and shot them in primer. The car is completely in primer again. Light wet sanding next week and paint the week after!

(...after looking at the pictures) How many more times do I have to tell you to put that hose behind your back, get closer to the car, and move slower? Damn kids.
In case anyone wants to know, the glaze fills pin holes from the plastic filler, and any imperfections that were left after sanding the plastic filler.

The car looks phenomenal and I think Mike, and I, are very happy with the results so far.

With a little luck the next pics you see will be the test colors to help Mike decide what color to paint. Maybe put it up to a Moparts vote????

I have to put up with theirs, they have to put up with mine. With the HVLP there is not too much overspray so the smell is minor. With Mike spraying in the driveway, my wife cannot detect a smell in the house with the windows open. There is a close up of Mike spraying and you cannot detect a cloud of spray.
Our lots are 1/2 acre+- so neighbors are not on top of each other which helps, plus my neighbors are gearheads too. My lot is adjoined by a 64 1/2 mustang convertible, a 61 (?) Biscane, and a late model mustang. For anyone interested my next door neighbors house is for sale!!!

Awesome progress!!! The car looks great!!!

I first planned to paint my Demon the same way but a year ago I went overboard, stripped it to bare metal, and I'm still working on it

Laid some test paint today on part of the hood and pass fender -- Dark Quartz Grey Metallic

We're pretty happy with the color, so this is what we're going with!

Well, we finished blocking/scuffing it tonight. Paint next week! I'm glad I don't do this for a living...LOL.

Can you tell this driver's side fender was cut in half and spliced with another fender?

well actually it is about 4 inches further towards the rear of the car. But close enough that you do win!!! We will need your physical address to send the bill for the celebratory dinner after Monday, when it is painted and out of my garage.

Anyways, keep it going because I am watching this thread closely, I always like to see a car makeover done on the budget and for a good kid, will she bring the car to MATS this year Mike?

Thanks Nick. No MATS this year...I can't afford it.

So far, I think my supplies are around $800. We're shooting single stage acrylic urethane at a whopping $96/gal -------> If you add in the pizza, beer, and lunches, I think I'm at about $2300.

Is that what those big, greasy spots are on the hood!??

Shouldn't lay your pizza boxes on the car!

Mmmmmmmmm, FRESH PAINT!!!

Rick did all the spraying. I put the finish coat on the front valance, but I have to give credit to Rick for the rest. The man knows how to lay down paint!! It looks MUCH better in person...pics only tell half the story. WOOHOO!!

More pics to follow when the weather clears and we can get it out of the garage. Supposed to rain for the next few days, so she's staying nestled in the garage for a while.

I like it! Very nice for a "garage" paint job.

Post pics when you get the chrome and matching wheels back on it.
