You can run the large positive cable forward to the starter main terminal & keep everything else up front the same & it's simplified. Some use a ford type solenoid just off the batt positive terminal in the trunk so the long cable is dead until you energise the solenoid w the key but to me that complicates it unnecessarily and I've never sweated the cable being hot all the time, just good insulation & watch for any sharp edges but if you use the solenoid back there use a special continous duty one made for this rather than a regular ford light duty intermittent type that that you would get at your parts house. nhra regs (which I'm not familiar with) may require the main cable to be dead & if so use the solenoid and or a shutoff switch in the rear taillight panel (if so put it in series w the positive or the ground cable as required).

I would NEVER run a "hot all the time" positive battery cable from the trunk forward. I will ALWAYS use the relay type set-up (as shown in the first diagram in Ron's post ) not to do so is just asking for trouble IMO. The master disconnect switches typically are not capable of handling a heavy starting current load and should not have the starter power draw routed through them. I have seen the arc welding job and resulting fire a "hot all the time" battery cable short can cause. MadElectrical

I think I've bounced PM's with the OP. Here's the best way to do it for any car IMHO. No hots outside the trunk area when main is thrown. If a street car and you are concerned about the constant draw at the alt continuous duty relay, run a wire from a switched source to activate the relay. That way when the key is off, the relay is closed and will also close when the main switch is thrown, since it's downstream.
