Hey that's a good one as well! Only the SECOND set of original orange 340 valve covers without the wire loom shield in the center wire tab location on the passenger side. You did one better, you have a production date assosiated with yours, the other example I have has no date reference. Here's my set. Is that the Duster or the Road Runners 340? Could you post or send me fender tag or BS info for those 2 cars? Quote:

Yes, I remember dicussing that car with you in the past. I can't say what happened in your case, I can only say that it's VERY MUCH out of the "norm", who knows what happened?
In my observation the 340's were (generally) cast and assembled very soon afterwards, usually days or weeks afterwards, a month or two after wasn't uncommon. But even more unusual is the amount of time that passed between the time yours was ASSEMBLED, usually the norm is a few days, maybe a week or so, before the Scheduled Production Date of the car. To have an assembled engine sit around for 4 months waiting for a car is way out there! I can only guess it was due to some kind of supply or scheduling malady back when it was ordered/built.
As far as blue vs orange engines, myself and a few of the other guys have bounced various therories around as to why they changed from Orange to Blue during the middle of a production model year. One of the possibilities that I've considered is that there was some kind of problem or production efficiency discovered that influenced them to change. Since most HP big blocks were painted orange, and all other small blocks were painted blue, maybe it was decided to add the 340 to the 318/360 assembly/paint room and to just use one color for all small blocks rather than to have special handling of only one small block so that it could be painted orange? Tough to say but the more original evidence we can gather, the clearer the picture will become.

In 1971 there were 30,000+ 340 cars built. This should be easy to figure out. ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh2.gif) Does anyone have a blue engine from one of the other plants: St. Louis, Lynch Rd., Los Angeles or Windsor? In one of the rare 340 b-bodies from '71? Does anyone have a BLUE '71 engine from the WINDSOR engine plant: stamped " GW340"? Does anyone have a ORANGE '71 engine from the MOUND RD. engine plant: stamped " GM340"? Since the exhaust manifolds were different between the E & A bodies and they were on the engine assemblies when the engine was painted; it makes sense for the supply of engines to be used up at a different rate and the change from orange to blue to take place on different dates in the same plant (E vs. A). Probably between manual vs. automatic also. Are there 1972 Windsor engine plant 340s?
