My question is , I just started restoration on my 71 challenger r/t 340 car (auto) and the motor is the original, numbers matcher but is blue in color. Looks to have never been rebuilt or ever painted, but the other 71 340s i have seen, the engines are painted orange. Which is the correct color for the engine? Also, anyone know a good guy to rebuild the original thermoquad 4973 carb? Just been sitting for a while, and im sure needs freshening. Thanks!!

They were painted Orange in early 1971 production and changed to blue in the spring of 1971. Most agree that the changeover was made right at the end of March, beginning of April. If you post a picture of your cars fender tag, or a picture of your engines stamped number (see example) I can tell you what day it was built. I'm guessing it was a later built car and your paint color is original. * I'd gladly help you with your carb as well, just drop me a line. If your original 4973 is in decent shape, it should perform very well with a quality rebuild. Pm me for more info and see my signature, David. ThermoQuads:stock, street/strip and race; 800/850 cfm's, 860/910 cfm's and 1,000 to 1,060 cfm's. New parts for all OEM 1971-1984, Competition Series and SuperQuad carbs and custom fabricating. Carbs bought and sold. Consulting on pre-purchases so you get the right carb the first time.

DEMONSIZZLER super gas D Joined: Jan 2003 Posts: 826 Stone Mt, GA.	No can do Scott; I sold that engine several years ago. I only have the intake, carb and 1 valve cover left. The intake still shows the original corporate blue. The date code on the carb is 076th day of the 71 model year making the carb stamping March 17th 1971. I meant to say that the casting date of the 340 was 01-15-71 but I doubt the engine was painted for a couple months or assembled till then. The casting date on the intake was also Jan of '71. I bought the engine from the original owner after his Duster was totaled out by another driver, David.

mopargem master Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 3,380 KY USA	Hey Scott thought you may find my 71 Duster 340 interesting since it has the factory orange paint dated 3553 and my fender tag SPD is 423, built in Hamtramck. It must be one of the last orange engines. It's the original engine with never a repaint. It's interesting that my block has the maltese cross and a partial X as well. Heres a crappy picture.
