First post guys! great site. My question is , I just started restoration on my 71 challenger r/t 340 car (auto) and the motor is the original, numbers matcher but is blue in color. Looks to have never been rebuilt or ever painted, but the other 71 340s i have seen, the engines are painted orange. Which is the correct color for the engine? Also, anyone know a good guy to rebuild the original thermoquad 4973 carb? Just been sitting for a while, and im sure needs freshening. Thanks!!

Welcome to Moparts! I have a collection of 70 & 71 340 engines and pictures of others I don't own. They were painted Orange in early 1971 production and changed to blue in the spring of 1971. Most agree that the changeover was made right at the end of March, beginning of April. If you post a picture of your cars fender tag, or a picture of your engines stamped number (see example) I can tell you what day it was built. I'm guessing it was a later built car and your paint color is original. * I'd gladly help you with your carb as well, just drop me a line. You can see my work at Harms Carburetor Restoration Services

My January 15th 1971 date coded 340 was corporate blue.
If your original 4973 is in decent shape, it should perform very well with a quality rebuild. Pm me for more info and see my signature, David.

Hi David, January 15th? That would be the first I've seen even remotely close to that date? Would you either send me or post your engine stampings & and SPD info? I'd like to add that to my records.

I believe the change from orange to blue at the Hamtramck Assembly plant was March 18th 1971. & the stamped info will indicate "GM" - 1971 Mound Rd. engine plant. David, does your blue intake have the "HUMP"? I'll find a pic. ***** ignore the orange paint *****

Hey Scott thought you may find my 71 Duster 340 interesting since it has the factory orange paint dated 3553 and my fender tag SPD is 423, built in Hamtramck. It must be one of the last orange engines. It's the original engine with never a repaint. It's interesting that my block has the maltese cross and a partial X as well. Heres a crappy picture. Are the first two letters on the front of the block GM (Mound Rd engine) or GW (Windsor engine)?
