Good to see Ogburn and Jenkins are out again in Vegas.
And even Percy had his down there.
With Raybourne, Faherty and Leoffler (sp?) there were 6 SS/AH cars in Vegas. Not a bad turn out...
...considering there were a few West Coast cars MIA. Mazz was there, but with a 383 in SS/AS. But no Viera, no Rains, and of course no DeFrank Hemi car. I think Raybourne lasted longest on Sunday getting taken out by one the Emmons's in round three...who also beat Jenkins in the opening round.

Are you serious??? I think McCallum was first in the eights way back if memory serves me correctly.
On 11/25/94 McCallum was the first to run into the 8's. He ran 8.999 but never went to the barn for inspection. After Bucky ran 8.96 McCallum packed up his stuff and went home. If he wanted to claim to be the first he should have went through teardown to make it legitimate.
I have some cool videos from those (Bucky & Friel) days. I need to figure out how to convert them into a computer file.....in my spare time.

In your "Spare Time" David??? Good luck with that!!! Seriously though, when do you guys get any time off?? The way you fellows are working out there, it's a miracle you have any time to eat, sleep, shave, etc...
If you ever have the time to get to those videos, I'd like to have a copy. I was/am a big fan of Friel & that Dart of his.

I remember a story in Mopar High Performance by a guy who rode shotgun with Friel. (Defeo?) I always liked the car when it was blue and white. Seems like he held the record then at 9.44 or something. Long before the internet.
Anybody have pictures of Friel's Dart?

I have some decent pictures of Friel. I'll try to scan them by the weekend. Friel's car wasn't blue and white for long. That's the way it was when he got it from MacCallum. Circus Paint did a great job repainting it. It still looks good even 20 years later....or maybe more. Sure, it has a few battle scars but they all do.

The car was painted the brandywine in 1988. John went out in 89 to break the record that MacCullum had set to 9.35@144.06 and went 9.33 2 weeks before Indy. He lost to MacCullum at Indy. This was the first time that he broke the record and it was Barton powered.

would be cool to see a history of who set the record and what it was..anyone have any idea of where you could find that info?
I have that info available in the NHRA archives. It will take a bit of research and will be time consuming, but perhaps I can make it a winter project. It would be very interesting to see how many drivers have held the record.

I agree, I tried to search for that info myself but came up with nothing.
Here is a list of the records we have set. I'm sure others on here can fill in some blanks. I'm not sure about Holton, Westcott's & Baughman. I think Baughman had it at 8.88.
Look, it only took 20 years to pick up 1 second. And lots of rule changes.
9.35/144.06 - 3/10/89 - Don MacCallum 9.33/***.** - 8/12/89 - John Friel 9.28/***.** - 4/7/90 - John Friel 9.24/143.10 - 3/14/92 - Dean Mink 9.19/144.62 - 10/17/92 - John Friel 9.17/***.** - 10/23/93 - Arnold Bucky Hess 9.05/146.77 - 11/12/94 - Arnold Bucky Hess 8.96/146.86 - 11/25/94 - Arnold Bucky Hess 8.88/148.49 - 3/14/98 - Arnold Bucky Hess 8.82/150.15 - 4/14/00 - Arnold Bucky Hess 8.64/***.** - 11/30/02 - David Barton 8.55/???.?? - ??/??/?? - Jim Pancake 8.33/157.96 - 10/25/09 - Melvin Jim Daniels 8.29/160.08 - 11/29/09 - Melvin Jim Daniels

one step further, when was the last pre porter head, pre inline crossram ,pre tunnel ram records ----and what would be the record today with those same limits?
We ran real crossrams up until 8.50's. When Bucky was running 8.90's we still had cast crossrams, no sheetmetal.
I'm not sure when head porting was allowed but some people were really stretching the rules, that's why they eventually allowed head porting. Some people really picked up and some ran the same. Not too hard to figure out who was cheating. I wasn't old enough but I'm sure most of you witnessed this, I'm not telling you anything.
My point is, how can you pinpoint "pre-porting"? I would like to see the records too. I may be wrong but I thought it was pretty stale for awhile. Wasn't it stuck at 9.38 for a long time?
I remember going to Indy with hardly any SS/AA cars in the pits at all. Mopar was telling my Dad that Hemi's were gone forever, run a B1 instead. That's why Mopar gave John Friel a Lebaron to run in SS/AM. I'm glad my Dad stuck with the Hemi program.
