Griner valve body in a 904. I start in third. Much easier to control my rpm's.

Starting a burn out in first gear is fine as long as you shift to second as soon as the tires start to spin. The common practice is to start in second and shift to high and ease off the throttle as you leave the burn out box.We do not go straight to the beams, but stop short put the trans in low gear and move forward at least 10 feet to set all componants in correct directional motion(take out all slack)and allow all clutchs and valves to set in proper position.High RPMs and the low gear mutiplication of hi RPMs cause the drum to expire.

65' cable shift full reverse manual valve body in the car.
So I guess that starting in 2nd is okay as long as once the tires start to spin in 2nd, you shift quickly into third and remain for the rest of the burn out of course.

I've heard for years to always start your automatic burnouts on first gear, then quickly switch over to 2nd from there on for the rest of the burnout.
I just started doing 2nd gear burnouts and every thing seems well, But........
Now my transmission builder, who is probably the best in the North East as far as 27's and 04's has scolded me for starting out in 2nd gear.
He said that it puts unnecessary strain on the 2nd gear bands aside from other parts in the box, so I should go back to my 1st gear burnouts immediately. What gives on others opinions?

Whos your transmission builder i could use a real good one..i've alway started my burnout in second get the tires spinning and shift to third..

Yes, I always ease off the throttle as I leave the bleach box because right after that is dry pavement where you do not want to let off the pedal all of a sudden. Then I put it in Neutral for a blip of the throttle to clear the motor and crawl to the line from there in 1st, no dry hops ever.

I always started in 2nd then go right to 3rd and decelerate out of the water and don't let the tires grab hard.

never had any problems that way.

I do it this way, always have..Im glad I know its the prefered method of Bob George racing LOL. i dont know why but I always kick it in neutral, and clear the engine, drop it in low then pull forward turning the first staging beam on, then I go to neutral again (I dont know if this is good or not) clear the engine again while waiting for the other guy to pre stage, then I drop it in low again and proceed to stage.

IMO there is no reason to start the burn out in first gear. We Mopar guys know we have enough torque to get the tires spinning in 2nd...for a few reasons also..

#1 wheel/tire speed is what will heat the tires up the quickest.
#2 starting in 2nd gear builds the tire speed up quick but also limits the time in the burn out box, I always wood it after the tires get going go straight to high...This is a bunch quicker than shifting through 3 gears..
And not to mention people who have non low band apply valve bodies the sprag is vulnerable for failing and cause the drum to grenade.

I set my line lock and put the shifter in 3rd gear for the entire burnout, no shifting needed. I just get the tires up to speed, release the line lock, and power out of the water box. 727 with Griner billet trans brake.
