I bought a 727 TCI Comp Trans and need to run with either a blanket or shield. Which one fits better on a 67 Bel II with no tunnel mods at all? I see blankets for as little as $90 or shields as much as $400.00. I want to make my decision based on safety/quality first and ease of fit 2nd.I have heard word that some of the blankets out there have buckles that are a challenge to deal with....Thanks for your input!!!!

If you're running 9.99 or faster, I'd get the CSR carbon fiber shield. It's mandatory to have something covering the bellhousing of the trans as well as the rest of it once you're in the 9s. This shield is a pain to fit in the car though.

If slower than 9.99, you can use the Lofgren blanket. It fits the best of all the trans blankets out there, but does not give you the safety of the CSR shield.

After what happened when my 727 exploded last year, I'd rather have the CSR shield and just deal with the hassles that go along with it. CHIP

I take it that your blanket didn't contain it well?

What about all the pics of CSR shields which have been shredded from explosions?

I had a CSR shield on it when it exploded. The shield was damaged but it definitely did it's job. Nothing came through the floor or through the shield. It was cracked, but not pierced. What I meant was after seeing how bad of an explosion it was, I feel better with a shield than a blanket. CHIP

I will be in the 10.90 index. I hear too many horror stories of 727 grenading and want the most protection. You say the shield is a PITA....Is that on a b-body ? ( 67 Bel II or Coronet) by any chance?

On my 66 coronet I have a blanket, no way to put a shield on.. with out cuting the tunnel up. But I use a rci blanket and folded it over. so two times as thick. it held my trans blow up. and it was real bad.

I went looking to order one and got the impression they don't make them anymore.

I thought the CSI sheild is moulded to the entire contour of the transmission so it will fit even in very tight applications.

I talked with a few folks on the phone today as well and they said I will probably need to "modify" the bell housing a bit and will need the dipstick tube that is required with a shield. I also found A&A Trans has a custom fit blanket for this....I think I'll go with theirs.Thank you all for your help everyone

i have a stock tunnel in my car and i am using a shield not the contoured on just an sfi aluminum shield that covers between the back of the bell housing to just before the tail housing. it is tight but it fits.
i never had a blanket so i don't know if one is better than the other.

Thanks. I could not have asked for a closer comparison for my 67 Bel II. It's good to know there is a shield out there that actually fits in case I go to that kind later....btw who makes the one you are using?

not to take away from A&A or any 1 but there is a blanket from DJ's that has a hole for the shift linkage.300$ i think and the buckles were under the pan and not on top of the trans where you cant get to it.

EDIT here is a pic.it is SFI also.

2 questions

1. Would a blanket hold heat in the transmission?
2. Would the potential oil soaking of the blanket become a fire hazard?

Yes it does. Went to the CSR shield and saw a big difference on the transmission gauge. We cool with a fan on the tranny between rounds if we are going laps or it is hot outside.

Why does divorce cost so much? Because it is worth it!!!!!

My dad and I both run the Lofgren blanket. Fits great in both cars and there is no fricken way they would "aid" in heating a trans up. They cover the critical area of the torqueflight and they have been proven to work. I haven't talked to Chuck in a long time. It would be a bummer if he wasn't having the blankets made any longer.
