The grey one had a VERY thin coat of silver paint, it was almost like they grille was so close to the right color grey that they just tossed a mask on it and dusted the silver paint on, it's bare plastic in allot of areas that are painted silver on the black grille.

*Topside, I've got all 3 grilles at my place now, if you want to stop by and check them out you are welcome to.

Scott, thanks for the info and your usual attention to the details. Also, thanks for the 2 moldings - that was a class act.
I scored a couple grilles and another pair of bezels, and am figuring out the masking while I wait for the bleeding to subside...
I owe you a beer, if only to compensate for the crappy MP rattle-cans I left you!

topside, the paint details Macho detailed are correct per my two used grilles and my one NOS one, one used is from a 72 Twister, one is from a 71 340 Duster, both identical. The black areas on two are natural as molded black ABS plastic, the silver is a fine metallic smooth finish with no texture and no noticable gloss "dull satin" would be a good description. However.....One of the grilles was molded in gray ABS plastic and has the black areas painted black rather than bare plastic. I'll take some pictures of both and post them.

All of the grilles were masked with a fixture that allowed some light over spray (no sharp edges or build up on transitions between slver and black, silver fogged under/beyond the mask in many transistional areas). 71 & 72 Marker lamp wire pig tails were slightly different but interchange freely, most won't know one from the other but they are unique.

Notice how the grille above has one headlight bezel with an adjuster screw relief and one side without? I've never seen an 1970 with the relief style so I'm assuming that they started adding the feature during 71 production sometime, I've seen original 71's with one side of each, with both sides reliefed, and some with no reliefs. It was a pig in a poke as to what cars got which, probably a transition that took place due to an engineering change during 1971 production, one of the original Twisters I recently had was built in June of 1971 and had one of each.

Awesome info!!!!

Where is this relief you are talking about? I can see or notice it

Thanks again!!!

Awesome!!

I think that my girlfriend's 71 340 did not have these...

Hers was ordered in late 70, so it came titled as an early 71...

Since you have experience with both plastic colors, have you noticed one being more resistent to cracking, etc. than the other?

Or am I just making a silly jump in logic?

Certain colors of plastic are more prone to degradation from UV exposure, but it's usually the darker colors that are more resistant than lighter colors. Plastic technology has come a long ways in 40 years, the ABS made now is 1,000 times better than what was produced back then.

Thats what I noticed with these two.

What type of epoxy would you recommend for fixing fins, mounting tabs, etc?

My body supplies place is good, but their advice can be expensive

I need to find a good 2 part epoxy or something to fix all the structural issues, before I start the refinishing process

I found some stuff at my local Autozone. It was called Plastic Weld and it was an epoxy especially formulated for ABS. It was about the consistency of toothpaste and it did not sag like JB Weld does. Really strong stuff when you let it cure.

I cringe every time someone brings up repairing plastic with glues or fancy epoxies. Here’s a grille that had 52 cracks and was barely held together in the middle from an accident that we restored for a customer. When the plastic is repaired correctly, you’ll never find the repairs and is stronger than it was before the repair. The only thing glues and epoxies do is hold the damaged area together, you need to fuse it and create a solid piece again. If you’re looking for super detail, you’ll be masking for hours on all the lateral slats in the grille.

This grille was about as bad as it gets, with all the cracks and some mounting tabs missing.
