What about mice and other things that have a tendency get into car parts?

This one turned over just fine....

What is that in the valley? Is that a nest or vomit?

Mice version of a king size bed.
Mice prefer the Mopar V8 over Motel 6.

Mouse urine really does a number on aluminum parts.

Too many cars, too many parts, too little coin, too little space to work in, too little time left to make it all happen! Update: down to one ride, still too many parts, a little more jingle in the pocket, gaining space, and it's going to happen this year!

When you pull the valley and oil pan, do us a favor and post some pics.

Well, here it is, directly after peeling back the intake pan:

No rust to speak of, or any other debris for that matter, which is a good thing.

Here is a shot of two middle lifters. That' not rust along the lower part, just appears to be burnt or something:

Here is the front of the cam, directly under the distributor hole:

Here's the bad news:

A picture of the front two lifters, right after removing them:

And after wiping down the tappet area:

You can feel the pits when you run your fingernail across the area, so I'm assuming they are shot. Is it safe to assume the cam is also? Or perhaps they aren't that bad and I can run them? Looking for some expert opinions on this one. I'd really like to rebuild this properly and not have to take it out again.

Cheers

New cam, lifters and timing set would be a good place to start. If money is tight look at the Summit house brand cams.

New cam and lifters. (the lifters are definately no-go. Given the cost of new cam/lifter set vs. just new lifter you may as well replace both)
Clean up the tarp crud and run it. Obviously an oil and filter change too.

Well now that I've got it this far apart, I'm trying to justify going deeper (bearings, rings, etc) to make sure that it is 100 percent.

Who knows what I'll end up doing.

Now to start bugging you all with cam questions. (In case anyone would like to chime in here, this is a 440 in an 80 RC that I would like low range power out of using the stock convertor and 3.55 gearing, 35" tires, power brakes and a 650cfm carb)

Thanks all

just remember when making your cam choice you have to get your tailpipe sniffed in Maricopa county.

Jim,

Does the go for all vehicles? Is there an age cut-off for emissions testing?

You could take the chance with those lifters, but if they wipe out the cam, you will probbably have to rebuild the engine because the metal particles seem to make it past the oil pump and filter.

On the other hand, it looks like your already on the path to rebuilding the engine......

I vote for doing it right once.
