Tack welding an axel, or any hardened metal such as wheel studs will most likely eventually fail.
After tacking, 7 of 10 of my Moroso wheel studs, the heads came off while tightening 6 months later. Because of this I talked with the lead metallurgist at work he basically said "yep, every body knows that!" With in a month after learning that, my friend told me he tack welded his Ford axels, and I finished his story, both sides broke. Not just the weld, the whole axel. This won't fail right away, it will take time to fail, in my case, 6 months of winter storage.

Absoulty,we work with all types of metals(heavy equipment, bridges and other structure) Heat applied to any compound metal can cause changes in the molecular structure.IE: a cutting edge on a bulldozer that is hardened with boron/manganese cannot be continually welded,it must be welded in a systematic weld skip method as to not concentrate heat in any one area.If you concentrate the heat you stand a chance of chasing the born molocules into a collective gathering in on spot.If this happens you cannot weld or hard surface that area it will just blow spatter also when it cools it becomes so brittle that you sometimes can break a 1/2 steel with a 5 lb hammer.

The old bearings were just shot, at least the left side. Nearly slipped right off. Got the new bearing and they had plenty of press as did the retaining collar. As a little extra measure of security I used some Locktite bearing retainer. I'm confident they will be OK for awhile. Thanks for all the great advice.
