Please help me select a cam.
Here are the Specs:
-472 hemi (pro built- bullet proof)
-stock hemi valve train
-M/P aluminum heads
-10.3: 1 cr
-M1 dual plane intake (no choice- clearance)
-B/G Mighty demon 850 annular carb
-4 speed
-3.54 rear
-Stock Hemi exhaust manifolds with 2.5" exhaust (no choice - clearance)- pro flow mufflers

I want to stay with stock type exhaust (no headers) because of the fast ratio steering arms and T/A style rear sway bar.
Help me select a cam that will maximise a stock exhaust system.
I would prefer hydraulic but would consider solid... again this is a street car.. E Body

Any other suggestions will be appreciated
Thanks
Glenn

You'll want something in the 510-535 lift neighborhood, hyd flat or roller, big $$$ difference. Go to the Comp Cams site & pull up, select a cam, you fill out the blanks, and they will pick you one. I would love to have a bullet proof 472, where did that one come from

The engine came from engine specialties in new jersey.
There's a comp cam in it now. I'm pretty sure it's a 292 and I'm not sure it's right for my combination. It feels weak at the top end to me.....
There were a few threads here lately about selecting the right cam (maybe old school) when you are using exhaust manifolds (not headers), and I want to make sure I got the right combination
Feedback appreciated

roller cam for sure. mabey .620 on the intakes .610 on the exausts.
keep the duration to about 240's at .050" on the intake, little more on the
exaust. that would be a awesome cam for your combo. mabey check with
ULTRADYNE. I'm sure they could come up with a cam like the above.

Don't really want to get into the expense of a roller cam. I'm sure there's a hydraulic flat tappet (preferably) or a solid that will work with stock adjustable rockers/ exhaust and will make good power.... and I'm not looking 650 hp.... maybe 525 to 550

Call up Tim at For Hemis Only over in Ontario. He'll probably have the perfect cam for you on the shelf.

you may want to double check but im 98% sure that stock manifolds will not work with them heads.

The heads are cast #2531110. The manifolds bolt up fine... gaskets match and all. Is that what you are talking about?

I've got the same set up. Tim set me up with a nice hydraulic cam that he has ground special. Do yourself a favour and take the lifters apart and clean them. Too many of them are hit and miss. Make sure they hold pressure and bleed them off before using them.

You could use a stage V with two AVS carbs. Has better fuel distribution than the MP dual plane and will fit under the hood.

Right on... for the hour it takes to disassemble and clean the lifters, It's worth it

Comp hyd. custom cam: 241-247@ .050 .550/.530 lift on a 113lca is what I'd run.

Wish I had taken my own advice. I always have to learn the hard way.

a Board member Dan (DRAM) did a cam for us on a 472 Hemi. It was a hydraulic roller, stage 5 unported replacement heads, Stage 5 intake with two carters, and about 9:1 compresion. The engine made about 586 HP and was very street friendly. This also went into an E-body with 3.55 gears but this engine had TTI headers. If you can swing the extra dough, I think a hyd. roller is the way to go.

Ultradyne has been out of business for quite a while now. Some of their guys and their cam grinds went to Bullet Cams. CHIP

Dave,

I don't know the exact specs. This was an engine that Dan fixed for us that was done by a so-called Hemi Expert. I restored this car and the owner bought this engine and it wipped out the solid flat tappet cam that was in it. My only hand in this was to direct the repair to Dan(Dram). He selected the lob profile based on what he had to work with.
You can PM DRAM, he would know.

I had Scott Brown spec mine for the 472....240/250 on a 112 lobe sep & .545/.560 lift. 3.23 gears & A factory High stall converter ( rebuilt ).

Works for me, seems we're all in the same ballpark.
